We hiked for 12 hours to get to Villa Simplicitas and it was well worth it. When we arrived we were greeted with warmth, the cutest dogs and the most charmy room with a stunning view. Then we were served a four course home cooked meal in the glass restaurant with live music and candle light. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. I will remember the stay with happiness and try to return in the near future.
The building itself is just stunning, from late 1700 filled with antiques and art. There is a piano and a pool table and beautiful surroundings.
We stayed for 2 days in mid May looking for something a little different in the hills rather than the lake side option. It is definitely value for money and our host Ulla was super making us feel welcome yet giving us enough privacy. It is a big old house and although not cutting edge and modern, it is clean, very comfortable and has nice simple furnishings. The views out over the hills and lakes, with the villages dotted in the distance, is spectacular and calming. Our room was #26 on the 2nd floor which offerred great views from the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom is more like a wet room which may not suit everyone but it was fine for us. There is open space to walk on the property or you can reach the higher parts of the mountains in a short drive and take some great hilltop walks. Again Ulla was more than happy to share some recommendations and history. Our walk one afternoon had expansive views over lake como and was unforgettable. We opted for eating at Villa Simplicitas rather than drive out for dinner and the food was always of a good standard - the balsamic risotto a fav!
Karen and I stayed here for just two nights in late May 2004 on a driving tour that took in various parts of northern Italy and Croatia. This is a classic Alistair Sawday entry. A bit quirky but good value for money and much more characterful than the usual fare.
Directions proffered by the hotel are crap. The signs referred to have been taken down. After a long drive down through France taking an hour going round in circles within just a few miles of the hotel was not fun. Invest in a good map. But after that hiccup, all was well. If your travelling without your own transport - forget this place - stay on the lakeside.
At these prices you don't expect luxury. Our room was in the annexe and was basic but ok. Importantly, the bathroom was spotless and modern.
The highight of this hotel is the dinner. Five courses of Italian home cooking, no choice, a reasonably -priced wine list and a log fire ( it was May and in the mountains). The view from the dining room is stunning. The food is, at these prices, exceptional. However, you eat what you are given and you dine when you are told. (You veggies out there need to check what the form is.)
Staff are multi-lingual and very attentive and helpful if a little chaotic. Recommended.
