We were the only guests at this large and very comfortable guest house on the night we stayed. We enjoyed the use of the sitting room with tea and coffee making facilities, and a fridge, and our lage room at the rear had a lovely view of the surrounding countryside. We were made very welcome by Jackie and enjoyed a delicious cooked breakfast at her cafe across the road the next morning.
When my wife and I were returning to Aukland from the far North, we decided to break up the long trip by stopping Opononi one night and Matakohe the following night. The Matakohe House was perfect for us. The room was spacious, very clean and faced a magnificent rolling countryside. The proprietors were very welcoming - there was small decanter of sherry to enjoy the scenery with. The breakfast that came with the room was served at the nearby cafe and was a hearty eggs, bacon and toast. If you crave rural peace and quiet, the Matakohe House is highly recommended. Matakohe is quite small and mostly consists of an art gallery, a Kauri museum and a cafe. However, there is a pub within a 10-15 minute drive that serves a very good dinner.
We booked a stay to break up a long journey and to visit the Kauri Museum the following morning.
The motel is in a lovely quiet spot. Our Satnav could not find the address, we put in the close bye Kauri Museum which got is there.
Reception was welcoming and helpful. An evening meal was offered, taken and enjoyed. Breakfast was included in the room price.
Use the provided electric mosquito repellent provided in the room
We had stayed at this beautiful place a month ago. The service we received was Top Notch, with Jackie and Daniel being wonderful hosts. The food was amazing (Fuhgeddaboudit), the bedroom was outstanding with very comfortable beds. Their pets were a delight to be around with, especially the cat and Ford, the Houdini goat, that would escape his quarters to go mingle with some friends down the road.
You'd love this place, NO DOUBT!!!.
The Matakohe House B&B is clean, simple, friendly, good size bedrooms. Right next door to the Kauri Museum. They also have a restaurant but only, I believe, available for residents. There were two choices for dinner - chicken or steak. Steak was delicious. Matakohe is some distance from any other food outlets therefore the convenience of eating at Matakohe House B&B is very useful.
