We stayed for four nights here in october. The staff are very friendly and Aaron (we think that was his name), is your fantastic, guide, chef, housekeeping, receptionist. There are few options for food in the town, but the meals in the Pousada are delicious - the buffalo steak was one of the best steaks we have had since moving to Brazil two years ago. So well cooked and juicy. The rooms are clean and spacious enough and there is a huge garden to look out onto from the terrace. Breakfast is simple, bread, local buffalo cheese, fruit coffee and juice, with delicious bread. The hotel can arrange all the trips for you too.
There are only two hammocks which is a shame as often they were taken - one outside each room on the terrace or even a table and chairs would be a fantastic addition to the pousada. Also, we had to request toilet roll, soap and clean towels as our room was not attended to for the first two days. However, a great place to stay and definitely recommended.
My nephew, niece and I spent a day at the Pousada do Frances, last February 2013. Although we did not have reservations, the staff was very accommodating. They found us an apartment and let us get the room sooner than we expected. The room was roomy, comfortable with a nice shower, very clean and the air conditioner worked very well. The public areas are very pleasant and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was served in the veranda; it was simple but very good, with great coffee, wonderful bread, buffalo cheese and fresh tropical fruit. My nephew came late in the day, past the dinner time, however they made sure he got a nice dinner. It was so nice to be served so well. We rented bikes from the pousada; they gave us maps and information on how to find the beaches and other points of interest. They also offer guided tours at reasonable prices. Unfortunately we did not have time to fully enjoy Soure. There are some nice restaurants near by and the center of the town in not too far away. We actually walked to it but it. We saw lots of buffalos on the way which was the fun part of the walks and bike rides. Praia do Pesqueiro (fisherman beach). We surely would be back at the pousada and to Marajo
The "Pousada o Canto do Francês" is an excellent option in Ilha de Marajó. The room has all the confort you need: air conditioning, hot shower, bathroom, good bed, refrigerator, very clean. The food is delicious with local ingredients (the local buffalo cheese is awesome). The staff is very nice and helpful. They also offer some tours around and the guide is great. He took me to some very beautiful beaches, a small boat trip to the mangroves and to a local farm where you can see the region's fauna and flora. The price is good. It is not a big hotel, which is good!
We spent two nights here in late May 2012. As promised, this Pousada is well-furnished and elegant in style. Thierry, the owner/manager, is a slightly eccentric but extremely well meaning Frenchman.
Our room was small, clean, and pleasant, with weak but functioning A/C. The Pousada is very much on the outskirts of town, so it take a while walking to get anywhere. This is basically the only downside of the place.
There is a good restaurant a few blocks away, which is worth visiting. The kitchen at the Pousada is good- try the buffalo steak and cheese.
Breakfast is basic and tasty. It is very relaxing to sit on the covered porch and have a cup of coffee.
This was one of the most relaxing places I've ever been. Very quiet, sleepy, pleasant, town.
-We took a tour of a Fazenda, which Thierry arranged. It's worth doing.
-Playing night-time soccer with street children.
-Walking around on the beach, with water buffalo bathing in the water.
I wish I'd stayed longer and rented a bicycle. Good place, good pousada.
We spent two nights there. The entrance room is very nice decorated and the basic rooms are comfortable.
The pousada offers some wonderful tours. We did the Fazenda Bom Jesus trip which was a 4hours walk around the property of one of the farms nearby. The landscape was incredible and we were accompanied by a very good guide. After the trip your shoes will be dirty and wet, but you shouldn't leave them outside overnight to dry. Mine became a dog's favorite toy. The pousada is located in the middle of the small town of soure and you should like to wlk around rural areas. The pousada's street unfortunately does not have light at night, so it can be some kind of adventure to reach it again in the dark after some rainfall.
The island has its very own style, and if you are looking for something (food or bike or motorbike rentals) you should ask the locals (in Portuguese). We ate the best tacaca at the central place in front of the river. The pousada also offers some very delicious food. We recommend the fish and the buffalo steak.
One of the beaches is located 3 km from the center. The sea here has fresh water and is surrounded by mangroves. It can easily be reached by bike. But you should be aware of the tide. There are some small simple restaurants/bars with incredible good snacks for very small budget. If you get the chance rent a motorbike (at the mototaxi stand) and go to praia de pesqueiros. A very laid back long beach to chill out.
