StarfishandSeashells's City Tips

  • Panhandling is a profession. These people probably aren't Jesus in disguise. Some will cuss at you for ignoring them. Just keep it moving.
  • New Yorkers don't cross streets according to the crosswalk sign, so if you are going to do so, move your group to the side to let them pass.
  • Don't walk more than two abreast on the sidewalks.
  • When trying to figure out directions on your phone, MOVE OVER!
  • Be confident when hailing a taxi. Step out as far as possible and put you hand up very matter-of-factly like you know what you are doing. Only hail the ones that have their lights on (and not the "Off Duty" light). They turn off their lights when they have passengers. When you get in the taxi, tell them the cross streets of where you are going, not the exact address. They will let you out somewhere close. Never get in an unmarked car (usually dark sedan). They will overcharge you and are not licensed for cab fare. If they pull over, shake your head “no.” Be aware that taking a taxi may take you longer than taking the subway, because of traffic.
  • Eat street vendor food. But ask first about prices and check what you are being charged.
  • Wear comfortable shoes or add Dr. Scholl's gel pads.Take Band-Aids and Neosporin in you purse. Your feet are not accustomed to the amount of walking required in this city. Don't wear new shoes. Duane Reade is the local drugstore if you need items for hurting feet.
  • Tip 20% in restaurants and taxis. Tip $1 per bag at hotels.
  • Don't be afraid of the subway. Study the maps ahead of time, but don't expect to fully understand it. Use Google maps or a subway app to figure out which train to take. Remember there is no internet service once you descend. Ask a New Yorker if you are confused (they are the ones who don't look confused and reading a book or newspaper). Buy a Metro Card as soon as you enter the station. For groups, buy 1 card per 4 people, as you cannot swipe the same card more than 4 times per entry. When purchasing, the automated machine will instruct you to "dip" your card, which means swipe. Don't stand in front of the doors of an approaching train. Let people off first. There is time.

Central Park is awesome. If you have a partial day at the end of your trip, I think it's best to save for the last day so that you truly get the impact of the serenity against the craziness of the city. FAO Schwartz and the Apple Store are nearby and a few blocks back is the famous Dylan's Candy Bar (owned by Dylan Lauren, Ralph’s daughter). Directly across from Dylan’s is a wonderful pizza place (Jon’s fav), Patsy’s Pizzaria. A horse-drawn carriage ride in Central Park at sunset is magical. To truly enjoy the park, you should study a map on-line before you go. The Mall and Bethesda Fountain are the two places you will recognize from movies. Bike rides in Central Park are fun on Sundays when the streets are closed to traffic. We have used http://www.bikerentalcentralpark.com/bike-rentals.php on more than one occasion. We make on-line reservations. There are many places you aren’t supposed to access on bicycles, but we haven’t always obeyed those rules. The best thing we’ve ever done was ride bikes from the bottom of Central Park to the top, exited in Harlem, rode up to Cathedral St. John the Divine and then over to Riverside Park and back down. Also, it’s fun to walk into the lobbies and bathrooms in some of the famous old hotels near Central Park, like The Plaza Hotel, which is right across the street from FAO and the Apple Store, and the Waldorf Astoria, which is a few blocks over on Park Avenue. Just walk in like you own the place.

See the gorgeous fountains that outline where the towers once stood. Read the names of the lives that were lost.

    Tips
    • Get tickets online so that you have a time to plan around and know you will get an entrance time to plan around. The tickets are free but online asks for a donation. Use only the official website. The museum is not free. Be sure to see the fire station located next to the memorial. They, of course, were first responders, and lost several. There is a memorial wall around the corner from the station, too. And there's a little church, St Paul's, right across from the WTC site. It was covered in debris that day. This is also the location of Occupy Wall Street (which actually isn’t on Wall St, but in Zuccotti Park).

Chinatown is the only place I purchase NYC souvenirs. You can always negotiate price and their starting price is lower than Times Square and other souvenir shops. It’s also a great place to buy scarves.

    Tips
    • Chinatown is fun if you are willing to go to the underground market. We've had some crazy experiences. They take you to rooms down below and use codes to tap on the floor to signal to each other the coast is clear. Don’t be afraid. This is how they put food on the table. They are pros. You have to say the type you are looking for once you walk in and are away from other shoppers and they will invite you down. If you ask for Coach, they'll take you downstairs secretively. If you ask for Louis Vuitton, they may tell you no over and over. But if you find the right person, he'll take you to the people who will wheel and deal with you. If you want Ray Bans, you have to ask also. None of it is authentic. Always negotiate price. Remember that real Ray Bans are slightly heavy.
