To visit the temples of Angkor is why most people visit Siem Reap. I have chosen my two favourites plus some alternative things to do.

My favourite of all the temples. It's not the quiet serene place it was when I first visited back in 2005 but the sight of the silk cotton trees strangling the walls with their giant roots is astounding. It is famous for being featured in the film 'Tomb Raider' the temple was left for centuries to the mercy of the jungle. Amazingly, in its heyday it was home to over 12,000 people. Best time to visit is the early morning before the majority of tourists turn up and the light is better for photographs.

A must see if touring the temples. The faces on the main tower, probably the most recognisable and most photographed part of Cambodia after Angkor Wat face north, east, south and west. It is part of the Angkor Thom complex and it can be a bit tricky to get round with the passageways the steps. There are some interesting bas reliefs depicting, among other things, a battle between the Khmer and Cham back in the 12th century.

This is the nearest you will get to a beach in Siem Reap. It is 8km long and 2km wide and was buiIt by the Khmers in the 11th century and has a small temple in the middle. It is 12km from the town and unless you are fit and already know the way and can cycle, a tuk tuk is recommended. The water is relatively clean although there is some litter scattered along the beach. You can hire a hammock area for $2 and there is food and drink available. There are good clean toilets nearby although you will have to pay 2000riel ($0.5). I find it is a good relaxing place to go away from the noise of Siem Reap town but it does get busy at weekends To get there take the airport road but carry on at the turn off for the airport. 2km further on past the hospital and Tela petrol station is a turning on the right running alongside a small canal. Follow this for another 1.5km. The lake is at the far end of this road.

    • I prefer to go on the left hand area to the steps as it is larger and not so crowded. It is quieter on weekdays.

It is located 10km from town and I like to cycle there. It is a bit of a climb to the top but the views are worth it. To see the temple you need an Angkor Temples ticket. At the base of the hill is the small village of Suwon which is interesting to walk round. On the way back it is nice to stop at one of the many places that have hammocks and where you can buy food and drink. Although I cycle, the road can be quite dangerous with speeding trucks and tour buses going to the floating village.

    • If not quite fit and healthy I suggest taking a tuk tuk as the heat and dust along the road can be quite overbearing.

I find this place very interesting and absorbing. A lot of the vehicles are in a bad state, especially the tanks, which for me adds to the a sombre atmosphere. There are some interesting photos and collection of grenades, guns and other ordnance in the wooden shelters that surround the museum. There are very little information boards so a guide is recommended. It is located down a quiet track leading off the airport road. You can get a tuk tuk although it is a fairly easy cycle ride for any reasonably fit person. This can be incorporated into a visit to West Baray.
