A visit to Istanbul cannot start any better, as Hagia Sophia includes the whole story of the city into a single museum. The history presented by this building is incredible and definitely represents the style of Istanbul, a city which is always on a border ( a border between cultures, a border between continents, a border between civilizations )

The atmosphere offered by this underground cistern which once provided the water for the city is magnificent. The astonishing architecture and the mysterious lights reflected in the underground water takes you into the old Istanbul.

Connecting the Blue Mosque with the Hagia Sophia Museum, this complex has an important historical meaning and takes just a few minutes to visit. The obelisque, the German fountain, the Ahmed III fountain etc. are all located in the area of the Sultanahmet area and can be easily admired.

The Blue Mosque is the heart of the Turkish and consequently Istanbul Islam, so a visit here is a must in Istanbul, as it offers you a wide and clear view over what religion means for this city.

The Historic Areas of Istanbul are the main touristic attractions in the cities. They are spread onto a wide zone, but are almost all located in the Fatih district. Art and history lovers will be fascinated by the great architecture which resembles the Oriental style. However, everyone who seeks a special, energic atmosphere should take a walk and spend some time visiting and admiring the masterpieces of this so-controversial city.

The main positive feature of the district is the atmosphere created. It is very touristy, but it absolutely reflects the Turkish style and the Turkish culture and traditions.

Even if a lot of people would say this is off the beaten bath, I would say this is a must while in Istanbul. Climbing the Istanbul Sapphire, the tallest building in Turkey, would give you a complete view of Istanbul, which is really really great. You can understand the complexity of this city and what it really means. Seeing 2000 years building on the one side and modern skyscrapers on the other, all surrounded by the sea and by the picturesque Bosphorus is a unique opportunity for any traveler.

Despite being less luxurious than the Blue Mosque, this mosque is the one which started the actual style of all Turkish mosques. Its 600 years of existence passed, keeping it untouched. I would recomment everyone who visit Istanbul to see this masterpiece.

This is the best place to visit in order to understand the Turkish style and how it works. Unfortunately, certain people can be quite annoying so I recommend not to go here if you have definite western prejudices.

Istanbul Modern is one of the best modern art galleries in Europe. Its location in the picturesque Beyoglu near the Bosphorus makes it an even more interesting attraction. This is the best place to escape for a few hours from the crowded historical centre, as it offers both quality art and peace.

The modern western-inspired palace in Istanbul represents a real gem. Located in Besiktas, in the new part of the city on the shore of Bosphorus, it offers beautiful gardens and a fascinating interior. This is deinitely a must in Istanbul. The contrast between this palace and Topkapi palace is a feature any visitor should experience and notice while in Istanbul, as it reflects the wide variety of culture which, together, form the complex cultural structure of the city.

A trip with the Galatasaray tram on the animated Istiklal street is a specific Istanbul activity. Do this if you want to experience life like a local.

The tower is a gem in what concerns the beautiful landscape one can see, covering the biggest part of Istanbul. The historical meaning of the old tower is also complex, but, unfortunately, it is poorly presented.

A boat cruise on Bosphorus at night is essential while in Istanbul. The landscapes are astonishing, as the lights of the city are of a wide variety. Also, you can admire the historical buildings in the northern Bosphorus, such as the Rumelian Fortress, the Kucuksu Palace, and the two bridges over Bosphorus, which complete the beautiful landscape.

The house of the Ottoman power is nowadays rather poorly preserved, as there were a lot of fire bursts throughout history which destroyed a lot of valuable things. However, the Topkapi palace is a must. The views over the Bosphorus, the architectural features (which were preserved..), the treasures are good reasons to visit the palace.

Nice collection of architectural pieces in a picturesque side right near the Gulhane park.

A park going down the Sultanahmet hill, surrounded by palaces and mosques.

This museum will give you an impression over the evolution of technology in Turkey and not only. The interactive way in which exhibitions are displayed is unique and very interesting. There is even a submarine in the Golden Horn, which is the highlight of the museum.

A suitable place to discover another side of Istanbul from that in the historical centre. The peace of Bebek is stressed by the presence of this old fortress, which was once strategic for the city. The views over the Bebek bay and the FSM bridge are overwhelming. I definitely recommend to enjoy this off the beaten path side of Istanbul.

Kucuk Ev is a restaurant located only quarter a mile from the Hagia Sophia Museum, on a narrow tiny street, specific to the city. The high quality of the food and of the staff is enchanting. The value for money is more than excellent.
