We are coming end of May I am travelling with my 2 children age 6,2. My question is I am thinking of buying all snorkelling gear before coming, are you allowed to wear snorkel mask? Do I need to buy the fins? My kids are not swimmers so hoping to be in the shallow end of the reef, will we see loads of fishes or do I need to go deeper?
Be cautious with Akumal Bay right now, due to debacles over tours not being licensed properly, scammers claiming to be government officials, blocking people from swimming/snorkelling unless they purchase a tour, etc. There are also government agents in the water if the Bay is actually closed - which has been happening recently due to ecological concerns.
You will undoubtedly be told that you must wear a life jacket and cannot wear fins. This is not strictly speaking true, but you will be harassed for sure if you don't comply. If you don't bring your own life jacket, you will be told you must rent one from a vendor on the beach (ie. a tour operator) There should be no problem at all though with wearing a mask and snorkel.
Do not wear sunscreen that is not eco-friendly. Try long-sleeved rash guards instead.
Definitely beware the tour operators.

You should be fine early morning to see fish. I brought snorkel stuff for kids I found on sale at target. Speedo was the brand another mom recommended. The make that also covers the nose. My 4 year tried it. Meh. The 7 and 9 year old loved. Go out early. More
Fish, less crowds. Also the outdoor cafe was super kid friendly but the gift shop a bit expensive. Have a great time!!!
thanks for your help really helpful so I wont be going out shopping buys loads of snorkelling stuff.
you can use your own snorkeling equipment but fins are not allowed ...
2 years old is to young to see the turtles because you need to swim a little bit.
You can go with your 6 years old son in a boat service from shore and in that case don't buy equipment because you will be given in the deal.
