Yes, you could visit without one. But, I think going with a guide would be beneficial. That is what we did.

It depends...if you you need to know details about the buildings and status, yes because there isnt any table with info about what you see

If you want to have a casual visit, dont need guide

No you don't need one, just do a little research on Wikipedia etc before you go, plenty of info on the web or download maps.me app

It’s easily doable without a guide. I’d Wikipedia it first though, just to get a decent idea of some of the things your gonna be seeing, as it’s got a bit of historical interest.

If you are Buddhist or Chinese, then a guide is not necessary.

If you are from abroad and interested in knowing the history of Chinese politics and Tibetan Buddhism, then you should get a tour guide.

If you just want a walk in the park and can read Chinese, then you can just go without one.

However, I would recommend one, since Chinese tour guides are very knowledgable.
