Hi will be travelling to Lucca in May for five nights. What is the best way to travel from Pisa Airport to Lucca. What are the 'must dos' and can I travel by train to surrounding cities of interest without to much fuss.
Hi, I hope I am not too late with this. We travelled by car so cannot comment on the public transport other than to say that I know others who have used trains without problems. The main Piazza are both worth a visit, as is the Cathedral where you will see the Santa Croce.
Ticket Validation machines can be found on the platforms.
Hi, we used the shuttle bus from Pisa airport to Pisa train station, then on to Lucca by train. We found it very easy to use the trains to get about but beware of pick pockets. They will come across as trying to help you, but its just a distraction.
The easiest way to get to Lucca is by bus. You have to buy your ticket inside the airport and the bus is to the right on exiting the airport. The bus drops you inside the walls of Lucca so depending on where you are staying everywhere is a walkable distance. You can get a train from Lucca to Florence or Viareggio. However if you don't get a train by 10.30 they have a 2 hour break!
A must do in Lucca, hire a bike and cycle around the walls..ref train ticket validation you have to insert your ticket into a machine before you board your train. The machines are near the ticket office..this date and time stamps them. We used a very efficient train service from Pontedera to Florence, my suggestion would be to look up the services from Lucca on the web..enjoy!..Lucca is fabulous and if you want any leather bags 'Officina de Pelle' is a really lovely shop and very reasonable prices..
Airport bus to train station, very simple, buy the cheap bus ticket on arrival in to Pisa .
Turn left out of airport station to catch bus. Short trip.
Always get train ticket validated prior to boarding trains too.
