We had an amazing trip, the ship, the food, the crew were all amaing. However on the last night my sister wanted to put some money on my account (things had been missed charged and she wanted to pay for them) they charged her visa but the money never made it onto my account. I've emailed them twice and both my sister and I have been on hold for over an hour and then given up waiting to talk to someone. It's disappointing because the cruise was good. Just watch the transactions on your statement.

This was the first cruise for my wife, the second for me, but not for nearly 20 years. Just needed a quick getaway from kids. Koningsdam hits it out of the park. Top shelf service, top shelf food, top shelf drinks. We could not be happier with our experience. It really felt like a vacation from start to finish. All the food on the LIDO deck was good for the most part. Main dining room was beautiful and the food was terrific...not everything hit it out of the park but certainly met any expectation. The pizza by the pool was very good, as were the burgers. My wife's fave was the herring at the Dutch cafe. Great coffees, great Dutch food. Our room attendant was very attentive. Rooms straightened up daily, if not twice. The entertainment was very good for the most part, and the main stage light show and dancing was quite spectacular! All the staff were gracious and welcoming. Now I just need the casino to give me back the $200 I lost. Will definitely take Holland America again. Excellent cruise. The only hiccup was our first cabin had a banging noise on one wall that would have kept anyone awake. They quickly found us another room. As a resident of BC's Lower Mainland, these trips are great value as we have the luxury of not needing a flight.

Just completed an Alaska Cruise on the Koningsdam. The ship and most staff are wonderful! To say we are very disappointed with the food, an experience in the dining room and contracting COVID-19 would be an UNDERSTATEMENT! #1 Excited to go to the dining room for dressy night and filet mignon oscar. Server was at our table once after another large table was seated. He took our order and NEVER came back even once to check on us. Had to continually try to flag someone else down to even get a glass of wine for dinner, we had completed our meal before any arrived. The food …. The filet mignon was a slice of roast beef with crushed pieces of shrimp .. completely flavourless. Finally the Maître de came to apologize and sent a gift of underripe chocolate covered strawberries to our room. #2. Decided to give the dining room another chance. Service was much improved, however, the food had not. French Onion soup was great, but the Parmesan crusted veal was nothing more then what tasted like a greasy spoon deep fried cutlet. Tasted 0 Parmesan and could not eat as was so grease laden. #3. OK let’s try Room Sevice..another poor choice. Ordered the roasted chicken. Received a piece of chicken breast that was so old and dried out I couldn’t cut it let alone chew it! Was sawdust in your mouth .. completely inedible. #4. Breakfast at the Lido Market. Eggs Benedict, my egg was completely raw! Barely had the membrane cooked enough to hold on the plate, dangerous and inedible! To top this off I received breakfast sausage that had 0 colour and looked to be boiled. #5. My partner contracted Covid-19, as did many other passengers. We were then put under isolation rules on board which left us at the mercy of room service. We were actually lied to about the availability of certain items, orders not correct, always a fight to get your order fulfilled correctly. #6. For disembarkation, all the passengers, at least 60, who had unfortunately contracted COVID 19 ( possibly on the ship) were actually herded like cattle into the same room to be held for clearance an made to wait for an extended period of time. I believe the purpose of this was to make our rooms ready for the next passengers! During the wait at the BB King room, the staff were laying out menus for the guests getting on the ship at the same time….with at least 60 Covid positive passengers to handle. Total joke !

My wife and I with two good friends took the 7-Day Alaskan Inside Passage Cruise from Vancouver sailing on 27th September. This was our second time on the Koningsdam and the ship looked even smarter than when we previously sailed with her four years ago. Again, the staff were outstanding and our stewards Mayan and Edi were very attentive and just wanted us to be happy. The food was even better this time and we had all selected the 'Drinks Package' and therefore no surprising bar bills when you check out. You can get an unlimited number of drinks (cocktails, spirits, flat and sparkling wines, beer, coffees and soft drinks) each day as long as their list price is $11 or less. For excursions we took the White Pass railway trip up the mountain and through the clouds which made you hold your breath at times because of the sheer drops and makes you wonder about the people that built this. We also took in the Saxman Native Village, Dance Performance and Totem Park which taught us quite a bit about some of the First Nations people's. However, the Whale Watching excursion was cancelled due to a lack of a parking spot in the bay and seeing Hump Backed whales was my primary reason for taking the cruise. I was deeply disappointed and left wondering why Holland America could fail to secure a parking slot or why they didn't get the excursion boat to come and collect us from outside of the bay or arrange a ferry type transfer? The food, again, was outstanding and I take off my hat to the team at the Grand Dutch Café who appear to have memorised the names of all of the passengers on baard which was so impressive and makes everyone feel so special.

Before you choose HAL check the Better Business Bureau site. Here you will find a D- rating. And if you read the complaints, you will find that 99% are dealing with refunds and money owed. And you will also find that most complaints state that reaching customer services is impossible. I have been owed $1300 since May. I contracted co-vid on the cruise and had to quarentene in Vancouver for 4 days. I was told hotel and meals would be reimburssed according to their policy. I was given forms, filled them and no responce. The other couple we were traveling with were also poitive with co-vid They are at the top of the Marinars Club. They filled out their forms and had their money within two weeks. PLEASE read other cruise company's reviews on the BBB site. You will find that their ratings are much higher, and most complaints are about issues other than monetary issues. It may be that HAL is in trouble. I love cruising and have cruised HAL before, but after this NEVER again.
