It’s a wonderful city, lively, friendly lovely people, we never felt threatened or worried. We travelled on our own not on any tour, using city buses, the metro. Street carnivals and the big official carnival and street musicians match the beauty of this world city

Getting to the site is easy taking Uber (great service in Rio overall), just put in Painerias Corcovado location takes you to the top drop off area by the visitors center. You can also take a train/tram but crowds can be large and waiting. Once at visitor center (buy your tickets before online) check in and take a van to top (included with ticket) and a long walk and steep. Go early before 9 to limit crowds. At base of statue many people no matter what time but can get your pics of the statue and great views of the city below. I was concerned about getting a car back (several Ubers dropped our ride up due to the distance and rough roads I think) but that was easy and pick up is at the drop off area, not the actual entrance of the visitors center. There are also many cabs but Ubers were quick the morning we were there. Worth the time and money if you go to Rio!

Ipanema Beach is way less tasty in Copacabana and right around the corner from Copacabana. It’s worth visiting just because it’s more pristine and less populated. A lot of the locals come here to go to the beach.

This is the first stop on the cable car on the way to Sugarloaf. It has several viewing areas, shops, and food/beverage outlets. It's nice but Sugarloaf is the main attraction.

Plan ahead so you get to tour the Threatro Municipal - it's so beautiful! We saved it for our last day in Rio, not realizing the tours didn't start until 11 a.m. (too late for us)! Better yet, see a production there. It's supposed to be one of the best theatres in the world. It anchors one end of a long plaza and has other buildings of interest around it. Also easily accessible by VLT (public transit light rail) or subway. We ended up at this plaza a lot as our hotel was one street away. Many choices for dining and the people-watching was great. Lots of homeless people and police everywhere. My 14-year-old & I felt quite safe.

We stayed two blocks away and it was an easy walk. There are may vendors approaching you to stay in their area and the prices vary a fair bit. Talk to a few before deciding, we found going farther south down the beach towards zone 1 was better. We had the added service of our feet being watered throughout the day as an included extra and we could fit 4 chairs under one large umbrella. Expect a non stop stream of beach vendors selling everything including full lunches cooked in front of you.

We toured this park with a guide in a car. We stopped at a number of view points with very nice views of Rio. It's a very luch forest/jungle particularly considering it's in the middle of a huge city. There are quite a few places to hike/bike for those inclined to do so.
