    highly recommended!

I was not expecting too much before I go, however, once you reached the top of the mountain, you will be amazed by the view.

the interior and exterior of the museum are also very well designed. you feel the sense of Zen, and also the environment reminds you to take a breathe and look at the art pieces slowly.

A mid-sized shrine, within a lovely environment. Seems quite popular among the locals. At the courtyard of the shrine is a massive tree, which, I was told, the third largest in Japan. Near the entrance, there is a row of Japanese torii leading towards a small worship hall. This row of torii, red in colour, offers an excellent backdrop for photo taking.

In general, Atami gets a lot of bad press for nothing to see (apart from the Sex Museum). Kiunkaku, however, is definitely worth checking out. The original two buildings date from the Taisho Period when Japanese were mixing Western elements into their traditional design. The result is fascinating architectural features, including large fireplaces with stone Buddhist carvings for the mantels, etc. The original buildings were later purchased along with a large plot of land then "wings" added to form a giant square enclosure surrounding a beautiful Japanese garden. The entire complex was run as a Japanese Inn for the wealthy and almost every famous author in modern Japan has stayed there - which is why they couldn't tear it down when the most recent owners wanted to get out of the hotel business. A group of concerned citizens banded together and fought the wrecking ball, forcing the city to buy the entire facility. Although they left it to crumble, someone at City Hall finally realized that the place could be a tourist draw and Kiunkaku was renovated. The city built a glass "salon" that extends into the Japanese garden, providing an amazing backdrop for concerts, many of which are free. There is also an art gallery with rotating exhibitions of local artists, as well as a "workshop" space for handicraft hounds. (The last session I attended was for pressing dried flowers.) I live in the area and definitely this is one of the more interesting places to spend some hours in Atami!

It is possible to use a car to reach this shrine, but I would not suggest it if you are not an Atami local. Very steep and narrow, with no mirrors or curbs. Be safe and take the challenging stairs, and you are rewarded with a beautiful view and a solemn shrine. The store closes very early so check ahead if you want a stamp. Good for those very interested in Shinto, otherwise the climb may not be worth it for you. Take your time and do not follow a schedule and you will enjoy it more.

Nice atmosphere but amazing few people at the beach. Friendly but rather difficult to manage only with english. But as it said. Where it is a hearth there always will be room.

I've been to this show on (mostly) day trips from Tokyo multiple times now. It's short but has its intense moments and can be enjoyed from multiple spots around the bay. Though the 'About' description here says they only take place once a season, it's actually much more frequent than that, happening more than a dozen times each year. So outside of the typical fireworks season, this is a good option for still being to experience this aspect of Japanese culture.

Atami Baien, or Plum Garden is one of the best, if not best, in Japan. It is well-known for its early blooming trees but has both mid and late bloomers so the blossoms can be enjoyed over a long period. My wife and I visited during the Ume Festival (Plum Festival), although the stalls in the gardens were not quite open at the time of our visit. It was hard to believe it was early February with the various shades of blossoms and leaves. Within the grounds there is a man-made waterfall that you can walk behind and view the garden and a wooden bridge through the water., There is also the Sawada Seiko Memorial Museum, Korean Garden and Nakayama Shinpei Memorial Hall. Sawada was a well-known sculptor and painter from the Atami area and Nakayama was a songwriter. Entrance fee to the park is 300 yen but if you are a resident of Atami or staying at one of the hotels/ryokans, then it is just 100 yen. If you plan on visiting the Museum of Art (very worthwhile), keep your ticket stub since this will give you a 300 yen discount on the entrance fee.

Didnt have long here so can only really talk about the restaurant. Great views and really nice food. Service was really slow and the staff seemed to be rushed and confused - even though it wasnt really busy!

This old and famous hot spring close to Mt Fuji was loved by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. He brought the hot spring water to Tokyo for his bath. It used to be a famous honeymoon location. There are many hotels and inns to choose from. Try indoor and outdoor tubs. If you take Shinkansen, it is only 50 minutes away from Tokyo. There is long distance bus service to here, too.
If you are in or around Tokyo, this is a very interesting cultural experience.

Great time and peaceful place. Would like to spend a little more time on the island and see about the campground area that looks nice. Love seaside camping.

Back after 12 years and much changes....more commericalised, more vibrant with foreign noisy crowd, more expensive items, less friendlier.

Just another street of Japanese local Atami snacks.

I'd recommend the honey being sold in one of the shops though. Otherwise, nothing there I cannot buy anywhere else... Some of the local fermented seafood were of top quality though, but certainly challenging for tourists to bring home.

Another I do strongly recommend is a Pudding stall hidden in a corner within the vicinity. Just ask around for Atami Pudding. You need patience though, because the queue is so long, the owner actually had to rent another place across the road just to accommodate the queue, and they had 3 security personnel ushering patrons to cross the road to place order. :D Very interesting experience. Must-try.
