Alhamdulillah, during my maiden visit to the KIngdom of Bahrain, I had the chance to visit this grand mosque as one of the stops with a city tour that we were on.
Did a small prayer in the main hall and joined the rest of the entourage for the tour conducted by volunteers in the mosque.

Was really impressed with the tour given, as not only did the guide explained to us the history of the mosque, but he also shared a bit of knowledge on the religion of islam, how muslims pray and etc. A brief explanation, just enough to share an introduction of the religion which was insightful even for me being a muslim!

Thoughtfully designed and aesthetically pleasing building housing some excellent art.

If you like self reflection through art take your time here and you’ll have a lovely experience. The whole floor is also a map.

Several rooms also provide an excellent insight into the early history of Bahrain

Nothing to write home about, very basic. I would say 20/30 mins max needed. Although not much for tourists to do in Bahrain

This is a market hrere in Manama where one can purchase a lot of stuffs: gold jewelries, spices, clothings, bags and luggages, etc. Vendors are welcoming, not aggressive like those in Morocco.

Two other attractions are located here: the Gate and the Shri Krishna Shrine. For the latter, my driver/guide had to ask for directions to visit it inside the narrow street of the souq.

Half of the towers are offices and the other half closed, so don't be deceived into thinking you can go inside these beautiful towers, but they're amazing to look at from the outside. The mall is for Millionaires only. Usual designer brands and foreign staff and over-priced dining. Obviously empty apart from staff and the odd shopping assistant but worth a look and selfie opportunity.
It's difficult to gain access by foot and there are minimal staff outside to help. Parking is complicated inside and outside and taxi's difficult to find.
Be careful of the Red & White taxi's, they're locals and rip you off.

It’s one of the most historic places in Bahrain, as it’s hundreds of years old! It is just a simple tree, but it still is a good visit whether you are with family or friends. I would say it’s a must visit if you live there or you’re just visiting the country.

An excellent collection of Qurans from around the work. You probably wont come across a museum like this anywhere in the world. Rather dark inside. No written guides provided. Entry fee.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d be swimming at a beach in July in 98-degree sizzling heat and 78 percent unbearable humidity in the small Middle Eastern country of Bahrain! “That’s crazy,” I told Maryam when she suggested it, “I’ll get heat exhaustion.” She assured me I would not. I doubted her.

I very reluctantly agreed, nevertheless, but not to the all-day excursion that she proposed. She, her cousin, Nasser, and his three kids – visiting from Saudi Arabia – were going for the entire day. Bob and I agreed to meet them mid-afternoon knowing that once the hot sun set around 6:30 p.m., it would become mostly tolerable to be outside. But no way was I going to be outdoors ALL day!

Al Dar Island was surprisingly easy to drive to; the tourist office where we bought our tickets situated at Fisherman Port in Sitra. The island is one of Bahrain’s natural beaches nestled around a lagoon and artificial reef.

We handed over our passports, bought our tickets, boarded the air-conditioned van, and drove past huge docked fishing dhows along the piers en route to where our water taxi (speedboat) awaited us. Donned in orange life preserver vests, our boat skipped over the glassy green water leaving ripples in its wake. It was a windy but short – eight minute – ride to the island resort. Of course, there was not a cloud to be found in the sky – just that huge ball of yellow heat daring me to stay in its path.

Clumsily maneuvering my way out of the small rocking boat and up onto the dock, I was greeted by a sign acknowledging we had arrived. And, yes, it was HOT!

Maryam had told us which thatched roof hut she had reserved and they were all clearly marked, so easy to locate. We passed Jack & Joe’s Restaurant, where we would later enjoy burgers, across the way from one of several bars. There was a deck for those indulging in sheesha as well.

The island shop boasted of swimsuits and gear plus novelty souvenirs for kids. Passing the fenced-in Kid’s Zone were five or six wood photo cutouts. The kid in me chose the surfing babe for my photo opp.

The island is not large, but offers a lot of activities, including: pedal boats, jet skiis, paddle boards, half-court basketball, kayaking, banana boat rides pulled by a speedboat, snorkeling on the artificial reef, and a large climbing frame that I would call a deer stand lookout tower… or maybe they have dolphins here.

Spotting our group frolicking in the calm green salt water lagoon, I dropped my bag in the hut and took it all in while walking barefoot in the soft, but hot, beige sand to the water’s edge.
Several types of huts were available to rent ranging from the basic shade one we had, to treehouse huts and even luxury overnight cabins with all the amenities. Off in the distance toward the far end of the island, I could make out a huge white tent. Maryam later explained this was a party tent for large gatherings. I was slowly warming up to the idea of being outside in the heat.

After changing in the impressively clean and modern bathroom/changing building, I was ready to bake and boil. The water was bath temperature and felt so refreshing as I waded into it until I could no longer touch the smooth, sandy bottom, which I could easily see in the clear water. The natural salt water bounced me around and upended me as I struggled to stay upright. The water was perfect and current manageable. I even forgot how hot it was as I dove underwater and then floated back toward shore. This actually isn’t bad at all, I told myself. And I believed it as well.

The afternoon began to fade and a gorgeous sunset presented itself. I snapped some early dusk photos, one in particular of a couple sitting on rope swings in the water, thoroughly enjoying the impending evening.

With a hearty burger in my stomach and plenty of water to stay hydrated, we bid adieu to the others and headed back to the pier for our boat ride back to shore. I smiled to myself as we ripped through the water acknowledging another first for me – and the fact that Maryam had been right and I had been wrong. I could swim and be outdoors in almost 100-degree heat and obscene humidity. And, no sunburn!

It was a good day all around, and I slept like a baby.

Family vacation with the camels. Great photo opportunity. Hands on and up close experience. Some camels are chained up, which is a bummer. Was able to hand feed the camels. Great outdoor experience. Admission is free. Highly recommend to all visitors.
