- pandkCanberraCanberra2 contributionsWe arrived in time to catch up to the tour just started- Andy, ex-US Army, now resident in Malta, gave an engaging and surprisingly in depth overview of the operations of the war rooms, both in relation to the defence of Malta against Axis air raids; and in relation to its role in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. In addition many well presented displays on various aspects of the operations of the war rooms in the war and later. Highly recommended, and I hope you get Andy as your guide.Written March 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Emily FAshford, UK28 contributionsWe didn’t really go around the village but we stayed on the beach. Anchor bay mainly. It was quieter than the village and very beautiful water. I had an u defeated camera and got loads of footage of the sea creatures and it was amazing. The water wasn’t too deep probably about 2-2.5 meters at anchor bay. It was quieter than the rest of the beaches in Malta so I would definetely recommend if you want it to be a little more quiet.Written February 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Emma CNottingham, UK21 contributionsVery good visit. Went on the tunnels tour and would definitely recommend if you like the history of World War II and what happened behind the scenes. Was glad to have done the visit when not too hot as apparently it can get very humid inside.Written March 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jake CGreater Manchester, UK157 contributionsNot only has the fort been preserved in great condition, it is now a museum which gives an excellent insight into Malta’s history, from BC right up to the modern day.
Make sure that you walk the perimeter of the fort as there are great views of the surrounding islands and three cities. I would consider picking up a map at the customer information point by the entrance as there are lots of small rooms with really interesting exhibitions that are easy to miss.
I really had no idea how much of an important role Britain played in supporting Malta through industrialisation and protecting the island during WWII, until I visited Fort St Elmo.
A must visit if you are in Valletta.Written March 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Cyril MWiltshire, UK22 contributionsThe guided tour of this museum was the most emotional visit I have ever done to a war museum!
Why? ….Because Umberto managed to convey to us what it was like to receive 15 minutes notice of an incoming air raid and then run for your life to the air raid shelter. Having arrived at the entrance, the people had to be approved to be permitted entry. Then had to navigate the tiny passages in darkness until the shelter was filled. Sometimes it was crowded to double its intended capacity.
Umberto’s passionate words conveyed the feeling of terror and humans’ instinct for self preservation.
This is a ‘must-see’ in Malta.
If you get the opportunity, make it extra special by being fortunate to get on Umberto’s guided tour.Written March 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Yet_Another_User_Nam4 contributionsAn excellent car museum and unexpectedly good for a small island like Malta. Many lovely classics from the 1960s which for me is the peak of classic motoring. This museum does not compete with the best in Italy or France but it is a lot closer than I would have guessed and prices were very reasonable. The displays are quirky and when we visited the museum was empty. Maybe in season the extra crowds would take away from the experience slightly.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
