It’s a very big museum dedicated to one of France’s most famous race sailors.

Even if you’re not into sailing it’s a very interesting experience. Well explained.

This is a magical storybook place. We set off from the very off-putting docks at Lorient on a large ferry. It was pretty difficult to find a place to park. We expected perhaps a bit of a cruise feeling, but there were no refreshments on board and there was a choice between outdoor uncovered wooden seat on the deck with no shelter, or aircraft style seats all in rows. There was no commentary available so we had to thumb through our guide books to find out what all the sights were on our way. However upon disembarkation another world entirely met our eyes. If you want to rent a bike in the high season come on the first ferry. We wandered on foot over hilly lanes and clifftop walks to the most beautiful sandy beach imaginable. Mica sand sparkled, colourful yachts bobbed in the bay, the sea was green ans lapped on the shore. One big drawback-only one single toilet and that was not on the beach! Some sort of automatic cleaning W.C. Otherwise this place is sheer heaven. And do what everyone else does. Do it in the sea!

I visited in July 2023 with a couple of friends. There was no english speaking guide available but the place speaks for itself really. It was only after watching The U-Boat Base episode of the Nazi Negastructures documentary series did I appreciate the scale of the base and the speed at which it was built. Putting to one side history and the purpose of the base, you have to admire the engineering involved.

There are great views from the roof of the pens and a number of WWII wrecks can still be seen.

The entrance door to K2 is located on the side of the building right by the submarine. This door is not signed very well and we just looked for the line up to enter K2. Arrive at the time stated on your onine ticket. The person at the entrance to the Flore submarine in K2 building had difficulty with her code reader when it was placed over printed online tickets causing a hold up for people to enter.

Visitors first tour through a small display area and sit on bleachers to view a short documentary film (approximatly 10 min) of the time period when the submarine had been in use. The film consisted of short news clips of historical events in the 20th century ending with the Cold War and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. It had English sub-titles. This film would not be of interest to school children in my opinion, and could be skipped even by adults.

The walk through the Flore submarine is really the focus of this visit to K2 and is the best/most interesting part. Before entering the submarine, personnel provide audio guides in your language of choice (included in ticket price) which provide commentary for the things one sees inside the submarine.

The submarine is very narrow inside - single file only. Very difficult to imgine 40+ sailors living and working here, but then sailors took shifts sleeping in the few bunk beds. There certainly were no luxuries in the living and dining quarters. There seemed to be 1 toilet cubicle (no door) and 1 sink for these sailors to use. The kitchen must have been a nightmare to assemble food due to the cramped quarters and the need to climb down a ladder to the food storage area. The dining table was a narrow board between the bunk beds. The work the sailors had seemed to involve dials and gadgets, in front of which they sat back to back. Many lines of wires were openly pinned to the sub walls. The officers quarters had been renewed, but had once been an area where livestock had been held for fresh meat and produce. The walk through the submarine takes about 45 -60 minutes, depending on how thoroughly one reads the Fr-English labels on things and listens to the commentary.

This visit is done without a guide and lasts about 1 1/4 hour. I visited this submarine after a visit to the K3 base which I think made a visit through the submarine more meaningful.

There is no guide needed for this visit. I thought the submarine ticket could be a few Euros less.

If you want to see some proper football then come here !
A decent stadium a bit like in England where you're a lot nearer the pitch than most other stadiums in France.
Lorient play attacking football so the matches are always good to watch and this years manager is the French national teams goalkeeper from a few years ago !

    English headsets available.
The tour consists of several floors the view the steel diving training tank, I am sure this is of interest to some, but there is very little in the way of other exhibits.
Having done the excellent tour of K3 we thought it would continue the U-Boat theme, alas not. Very few mentions of the war, U-Boats.
You have to book on the day and there may be delays.

The port of Lorient is quite large and starts from entry from the sea. It contains areas for the military, fishing, commercial, passengers and yachting. A lot of the port can be enjoyed when sailing in or out of Lorient. The inner part by the centre is for yacht anchorage. It is a nice area to walk round and can be easily seen when in Lorient.

An easy walk to take, tourist information give out a walking guide which leads you round the harbour area and into the centre of L'Orient. There are quite a few things to see around the harbour. The Tour de la Découverte - the old watch tower, the pavilions of Hotel Gabriel, a couple of windmills and "The enclosure of the port", where the French East India Company were based and several good viewpoints of the harbour.
