A free attraction giving you a sense of some of the history of the town. Has great photos opportunities. From the top you have a good view of the surrounding area.

We visited on the Bodensee Plus ticket. This museum combines cultural history, art and natural sciences. The art includes examples of Swiss artists such as Felix Vallotton, Segantini, Ferdinand Hodler and many more, especially those associated with Schaffhausen. The building was bombed in WWII so a lot of masterpieces were destroyed, but we saw an exhibition showing how the rest of Switzerland, including other museums, raised money for them to rebuild the museum and its collections, and donated works of art. There was also an interesting exhibition on natural resources. Much of the permanent collection doesn’t have labels in languages other than German, but the temporary exhibitions did. There is a map of the museum in English. Staff are very friendly and the coffee and cakes in the cafe are excellent. They accept cards, which is useful if you are visiting for the day from Germany and don’t want to obtain Swiss francs. Schaffhausen is a delightful town to visit.

The IWC Museum in Schaffhausen is a good stopover if you are a watch lover. The area is small but houses the history of the brand. The visit can be done in about an hour. There is a shop besides the museum if you want to buy or see some of their latest watches.

This is one of the many historical buildings in the town that make Schaffhausen a destination for lunch and a wander.

The ruins of the Radegg castle are worth to see for its isolated location, but the best part is probably the round walk to and out of it. My start began and ended at the beautiful village of Osterfingen with its surrounding vineyards. From here I went into the unpopulated Wangental and then up on a steep path through a sparse deciduous forest.

An ideal time to do this hike is on a sunny day in March with the trees still without leaves and the soil covered with the lovely blue flowers of the Hepatica nobilis (Anemone hepatica), rather rare in most parts of Switzerland. In German it is called 'Leberblümchen' (little liver flower), because of the shape of its leaves. Never before had I seen so many together at one place.

The ruins of the spur castle can only be accessed over a wooden bridge. Inside there are unprotected steps to a terrace with great views, especially down into the Wangental. A bit removed from the ruins are benches and a pit, thus a good place for a barbecue. Cars are not allowed to come here, the closest parking would be at the restaurant 'Rossberghof', a 25min walk away.

The masonry of the ruins is of varying quality. It is best at the corners, especially at the unprotected plateau-like eastern side, where the walls are up to 4m thick and where there also remains of a moat. The reddening of some limestone blocks might have been caused by a fire. Archaeologists, which had studied the place just before WW II, have dated its construction to around 1200 and its destruction only about 100 years later.

Nothing is really known about its history, but it is thought that it once belonged to the family of Radegg. Local tradition says that it had been inhabited by robber barons and there is a nice legend about 'Kätteli', a story too long to retell here.

From the ruins I continued on the plateau (between 580-620m asl) of the jurassic Südranden, past the restaurant Rossberghof down into the narrow Haartel valley (without a single house) back to the village of Osterfingen. It is a walk - in a leisurely way - of about 3h and the difference between the lowest and highest point is less than 200m.

You can walk - you can swim in River Rhein - you can travel with the Boat on River Rhein - or drinking Cappuccino in the Street-Cofes.

The municipal library offers free wifi also for tourists. They have two branches in the old town. The branch on Münsterplatz is a nice i$ unspectacular building combining old and new. Old and rare books and medieval manuscripts can be seen upon request. This includes a 7th century irish manuscript, the famous vita columbae, from the isle off Iona. Foreign language newspapers in their other branch at Schwesterngasse.

Our visit here was part of a tour of the city with a guide from the tourist office. A service that can really be recommended. This church is not only beautiful, but also offers a place to retreat from the city life outside.

The casino is lovely, a little smokey in the glassed slot gaming area. Poker stayed busy. Culture shock, there is an entrance fee of $10.00. They exchange currency but your wins in excess of the exchange amount will be in CHF

Clean and neat on the inside. It looks like they're currently renovating the celings. Not very colorfull in comparison with other churches. Very pretty woodwork around the organ
