What travelers are saying
- CherylKent500Canterbury16 contributionsWe enjoyed Oceanopolis whilst in Brest for a few days. ours was a fairly short visit - c.2hrs - as we just looked at the tanks rather than reading the information panels or watching the videos. We enjoyed the wide variety of marine creatures on display, especially the sharks. It was busy, but not unbearably so. There did seem to be some care for the welfare of the animals and a reasonable amount of space, except for one tank of very young sharks which was much too small. It was pricey by UK standards, but that's the case for many attractions in France. Overall we enjoyed it and we were glad we went. We were a family with a teenage child.Written August 14, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- CherylKent500Canterbury16 contributionsOur visit to the Botanical Gardens was a good start to a few days in Brest. Reclaimed from a 1970s rubbish tip, the gardens run through a valley with a river flowing through it. The gardens themselves are fee to enter, with well signposted free parking. The tropical greenhouses are only open in the afternoon, so we didn't see those, but there was plenty to enjoy just strolling through the gardens and out to the small beach just outside.Written August 14, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AdvisorKingVancouver, B.C.165 contributionsMy wife, adult son and I walked into the Chateau Brest on a Monday around 4pm, wanting to see the fort and undecided about seeing the museum. As it turns out, the only way into the chateau/fort is with a museum ticket, so we paid 7Euros each for entry with audio guides, plus 2Euros for our son, who qualified for the substantially reduced student rate.
The museum is very well designed, focusing more on the history and architecture of the castle in the first part of the audio tour route, and then on the maritime/naval aspects (from sailing ships and cannons to present-day submarines) during the second part of the tour. I liked this approach because I’m sure a lot of people, like us, are really interested in the fort as much or more so than the maritime museum, so this gets that out of the way first.
The audio guide had something like 40 different stops, each with about a 2-minute audio segment, some of which had additional, ”optional” audio segments. Our visit lasted two hours, and we were probably a bit out of gas at that point. I appreciate that audio guides are self-guided, so we could have skipped anything at any time, but, the tour goes along a fixed, one-way route, and you don’t really know what is coming next or how long it will last, as you wind your way through different rooms, passageways and staircases in the castle.
Overall, it was very well done. There were plenty of very detailed models, as well as original artefacts, particularly from more recent maritime history. The displays were interesting and informative, and there was something for everyone.Written September 1, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - perle369Malaga, Spain1,837 contributionsThis tower is also a museum and is a part of Brest's medieval history. It stands well on the river but look a bit lonely.Written August 17, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We can not believe how helpful she was, she also informed us about parking and transport arrangements.
