I walked a trail around the Shiretoko-goko Lakes. There are five lakes on the trail. Because this is the bear season, we had to have a trail guide accompany us. The guides keep track of bear sightings and close the trail if one is too near. You will see evidence that bears live here, including bear claw marks, evidence of their feeding, and pooping. Yes, bears do poop in the woods.

The guided walk takes about three hours and is undulating, but not difficult. You get to see all five lakes. When you get to the last lake on the walk, you ascend to an elevated boardwalk. Since the boardwalk is above bear level and protected, anyone can walk along the boardwalk. The best views, however, are from the ground level walk.

We were lucky to practically have the falls to ourselves. Shoes off and onto the slope of the waterfall to walk up.

Water was warm not hot, rocks lookwd slippery but weren't.

    A fun activity.

Nice long straight road for a good photo shoot. On the other side you can have a nice clear view of the sea.

There is a small vending machine for drinks too

Parking is free , entrance is free .
A short climb up about 3-4 flights of steps . You can still get a fairly decent view of the waterfall at the base . A stop break of about 15 min to see and take a loo break .

Waterfall action probably depends on rainfall, snow melt and so on. The Furepe Waterfall we saw was little more than a trickle at the time. Yet, the hike there was both beautiful and relaxing.

Joined a boat trip (a ferry contained over a hundred of tourists) and sailed for around 1-1.5 hours to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the area. Other on the same boat said they saw a bear but I could not see any :(

Travel Tips: If you wish to watch bears, you have to join boat trip in a small boat so as to get close to the beach. This is recommended by the local tourists who lived in the same hostel.

Stopped here and did some snowshoeing. The facility is beautiful and modern with some displays, a video presentation ($) and a restaurant. You can rent snowshoes here as well.

The view of Furepe frozen waterfall was nice - you can't quite see it in it's entirety from the observation point but the view over the drift ice on the Okhotsk is magnificent.

We had a guide take us out in the woods and found a couple of Ural owls - that was pretty cool. We saw signs of flying squirrels but didn't spot any.

    Fun place to visit!

Yuhidai sunset spot is located in a camp site area located next to Utoro cemetery and Shiretoko Prince Hotel. Its has a nice view overlooking the port and Godzilla Rock.

Only here: We had Hamanasu Soft Cream (Rosa Rugosa or Japanese Beach Rose). They also had Kokemomo (Lingonberry)! A delicious Sour-Sweet Contrast!
We bought huge scallops in the shell and sent home by Takyubin. Buy dried Konbu for making your own hotpots, and other local products, like beer & even a wine.
Also, watch the chef in the back making the 'white cocoon sweets'-very interesting.

Cape Puyuni is a lookout approximately 5-10 minutes’ drive away from the town of Utoro. There is a special lane by the main road where you can stop your vehicle to admire the breath-taking view from the lookout. The view mainly consists of Utoro town as well as the bay and the Sea of Okhotsk. Our tour stopped by while coming back from the Shiretoko Goko, and we managed to catch the sunset at the Cape itself. The views there are quite beautiful and scenic, but I recommend only stopping by if you’re on the way, no need to specially drive all the way out for this.

Every guide we had was quick to note Mt. Shari. So it seems revered and adds a nice background to Shiretoko. But it's a mountain (or maybe a dead volcano). If you have seen one...
