Air Force Museum Christchurch
#2 of 65 Museums in Canterbury Region
The Air Force Museum reminds me of other aircraft museums I've visited as well as war museums such as the Imperial War Museum in London and the War Memorial in Canberra.
This is one of the best free museums you will come across in New Zealand.

It is a really unexpected gem at Okaines Bay by comparison with other street museums.
I particularly liked that the settlers' cottages and commercial buildings were a lot more rustic, and seemed more authentic, than similar displays in bigger museums.
Canterbury Museum Christchurch
#4 of 65 Museums in Canterbury Region
This is undoubtedly one of the most diverse museums I've ever been to, with a wide variety of interesting and engaging exhibitions, stories, and displays.
I love museums as they can usually sum up a city’s indigenous people, flora and fauna, settlement, landscapes, and culture.

The best museum by far was the Christchurch Art Gallery featuring contemporary art by local artists.
Chch already has some beautiful art displays in its CBD that are worth a detour but an art gallery/museum was missing since the earthquakes and its just reopened!!!!

Akaroa Museum Akaroa
#10 of 65 Museums in Canterbury Region
A first class museum beautifully laid out with artefacts and information which gave so much information about the history of Akaroa from the days of the Maori to the arrival of European settlers and thereafter..
This free museum ( entry by donation) is well laid out and clearly shows the interesting history of the Banks peninsula and is well worth a visit

The museum is a little gem and I will certainly return to find out more about the early inhabitants of Sth Canterbury and Nth Otago who left behind these pictorial memories in inaccessible parts of the countryside.
A very good and Interactive museum on the Maori art and culture in the South Island NZ.

Kaikoura Museum Kaikoura
#15 of 65 Museums in Canterbury Region
The main part of the museum shows lots of artefacts from everyday life,Maori treasures, the local wildlife, past whaling activity, local archive photos as well as fossil remains.
Kaikoura community can be very proud of their achievement in creating a world class museum display telling of its early history now housed in the ultra modern Council building.

The Best Museum, especially for those who aren't fond of Museums!
The museum puts on treasure hunts and dress ups and has a great dedicated children's area - books, drawing, space.

The Toy Collector Christchurch
#22 of 65 Museums in Canterbury Region
It's a small museum (with more galleries opening soon) containing a huge collection of toys, both modern and from past generations.
The owner is so kind and hospitable and the toy museum is one of the best I have experienced in this country.
