We drove to this viewpoint which was painted in the past by artists to attract visitors to Yellowstone. It was a beautiful viewpoint.

Pleased to find ample parking just after the arch where you can get out and get a few pics without rushing to get one passing by. However, don’t except to be alone. You will have several new friends in your photo which was expected. Also in the same stop you can get the Yellowstone sign.

Each one of the springs in the Mammoth Hot Springs area has a specific name. The Palette Spring is the spring with an infinity edge look to it. None of the photos that are in this small gallery are actually the real palette spring. When I take photos, I write notes under the photo in my iPhone from the signs that are in front of each spring. It’s amazing to me that people just post random photos and that Trip Advisor has so much mis-information in regards to accurate photos.

I hiked up to Specimen Ridge when I worked on a Blister Rust crew in 1968. No trails then and spectacular views. Above the tree line, we heard a rustle, went and looked, and saw 10 to 12-inch bear prints and we hiked much faster down to the tree line! I would love to go back there as a truly beautiful country!

The info says more than three hours. Closer to 11 hours, more if you come in through Grassy Lake trailhead. Beautiful hike. Few things to remember.

Bring bear spray. We saw fresh scratches on trees when we went. Bring a rope to hoist your gear also at the hitching area.

Bring plenty of water. Suggest 4-5 litres at least.

Bring water shoes or sandals. You have to cross the Falls River. It is filled with obsidian & basalt. Bare feet won't work.

Looking at about 18 miles round trip, bring a lunch. Can dump your packs at the horse hitches if you bring rope.

A good thing to do while there is the field of the river. About 1/4 mile from the fork in the trail at the hitches. There is a pool of water in the river where you can swim. About 7 ft deep. Fed partially by warm springs so warm water.

The falls are amazing. Nice & cool mist after a long day of hiking. My pics show about as close as you get on trail. Lots of Huckleberry bushes & Currants along the trail. The ripen in August. You can camp with a permit. Can also take horses, but have to leave them at the hitching posts at the trail fork. Great trip, highly recommend it.

An interesting smaller geyser that is not too crowded. Walk the boardwalk right to it and get a great picture taken. We hit it in the morning on a calm day. Sometimes steam vent gasses can cover you up if the wind is just right.

I had not seen a petrified tree so we made this little side trip on the way to Lamar Valley. It is a quick little stop just off of the main road with a parking lot below and a walkway up to the petrified tree that is inside a gate.

What a view, nature at best. You can get close and personal since there is a wooden trail/pass You can walk up to the third tier that simply looks like snow.
