- SandyAmandaDothan, AL388 contributionsSmaller than I thought, but very interesting and educational stop. I hiked here from port. It is a beautiful walk on mostly sidewalk. You will walk along the bay, past a playground, small marina where you may see a seal and eagles. I did. Try to keep conversation to a minimum and your eyes on the trees for eagles. If you continue to hike, through the forest beyond the center and turn left after the forest walk, you can get to the raptor place. I would recommend this walk for travelers keeping to budget or trying to avoid crowds instead of a tour that wastes a lot of time. On the walk back, there is a tiny church to pop in and thank the Lord you didn't get eaten by a bear. :)Written November 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This was very interesting, and to see Eagles & Owls close up in a natural habitat was amazing. I saw a Natural Geographic on a few days after we went, and it was so exciting to know we saw that in person.Written September 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Southwest_GauchoLake Havasu City, AZ1,267 contributionsAmazing walk/hike up and around Beaver Lake. Trail is well maintained including stairs, bridges, etc. Views can't be explained. Elevation gain is just over 600 feet so it isn't a leg burner getting up there. Easy walking around the lake once you are there. Wish I had taken my pack rod to try to some fishing. Never saw anyone else on the trail the morning we went including bears. Would definitely return.Written August 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- ITRTVirginia45,053 contributionsThe Russian Bishop's House served as a residence, school, and chapel. The Bishop's House was built in 1842 and became the center of Russian Orthodox church authority. However, in 1969 it was closed. The National Park Service took over ownership and began a 16-year project to restore the building to its original appearance. Today, visitors can do a self-tour to learn about the history of the house, and its inhabitants. The second floor is the living/working quarters and chapel of the bishop. Tours are offered at certain times of the day and admission is charged. Because of the onboard time, I did not have an opportunity to tour upstairs. I enjoyed my visit, and I believe you will too. Enjoy.Written November 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- BrianMaryAdventuresFairbanks, AK360 contributionsTo get to the trailhead you have to drive about six miles up Harbor Mt Road, just off Halibut Point Road. The road is a one lane gravel road with lots of switchbacks and tight turns. Drive slow and easy and you’ll be fine. The hike is 2.5 miles to a shelter, and is up and down, than up and down and than up one more time. The views are amazing on a clear day. When we went up the clouds rolled in, it started to drizzle and then the sun came out. Great hike, a bit more challenging than expectedWritten July 18, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ITRTVirginia45,053 contributionsSt. Michael’s Orthodox Church is in the center of Lincoln Street in Sitka. The church was constructed in in the 1840s and was the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese when Alaska was under Russian rule. St. Michael’s Cathedral was once the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church in North America. Today it is the seat of the Diocese of Alaska.
The cathedral’s dome, bell tower, and cross can be seen from almost anywhere in town. Indigenous people make up a large proportion of the congregation. In 1966, the original church was burned but was reconstructed in an exact replica of the original.
Two important icons are those of the “Sitka Madonna” and “Christ the Judge”. People believe the Madonna did many miracles dealing with healing of the eyes. The gold doors are the original ones saved from the fire by a parishioner. The golden gate doors symbolize the gates into Heaven. Icons on the main altar are dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, and the. hand-carved “throne” was made to honor the first Orthodox bishop of Alaska.
The chandelier is one of the few pieces which was reclaimed and restored from the original church. Symbolically, it is a visible link to Sitka’s Russian heritage as well as the cultural exchange between the church and the indigenous Tingit people
The showcases in the nave and each chapel contain icons and religious items salvaged from the fire. Congregants stand during the service as there are no pews. However, seating is available for the elderly. St. Michael’s Cathedral is a national historic landmark.Written November 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is a touch aquarium and a tour where they explain the life cycle of the salmon and you can see the young fry and see the adults coming to spawn (depending on the time of year). The guide was very knowledgeable and was happy to answer questions as we went around. I wanted to buy from the souvenir shop to further support their work but it was pretty small and expensive.Written September 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I went here with a group of about 20 people, so no concerns about bears, especially because the leader and the tail-ender for the hiking group had bear spray. This was a cruiseship tour, and unfortunately I can't remember the name of the actual guides and the tour company, as everything was excellent.
The bus took us to the parking lot, about a 20 minute drive, then we first walked the Mosquito Cove trail. That trail gives a great introduction to the rain forest, and it also has nice views of the coves. You'll likely see quite a few seabirds. The trail is well-maintained, although light hiking boots were helpful in a places.
After that we took the short estuary trail, mostly on boardwalks, which gives an introduction to the estuary ecosystem. At the beginning of the trail, there is a bird-viewing pavilion with several panels discussing birds and other wildlife that live in this area.
The end of the estuary trail connects with the 'Forest and Muskeg' trail, which takes you up a hill to a perched bog or muskeg - interesting, as it looks as if the area has been planted with bonsai spuce, but that's just how big the trees grow in this nutrient-poor environment.
Overall, this is a great place to get an introduction to some of the ecosystems in the Sitka area.
If you happen to be here at salmon spawning season, there will be thousands of salmon visible from the bridge at the end of the estuary trail.
There are maps at two places near the parking lot, and directional signs along the trails.Written July 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It has changed name and is now the Harbor Mountain Brewing company. Also 2. Tripadvisor map puts it slightly in the wrong place. You can find it on the main road just behind the service station at saw mill creek road.
Greeted by super helpful staff helping us select a few flights of beer. Tried various lagers, IPAs and stouts all excellent and of course all brewed on the premises. Also bonus is there is a separate company sharing premises that serves amazing pizzas - Campfire. Great pizza oven and pizza selections.
