I have always wanted to visit here where Saint Damien celebrated Mass for those who had leprosy - now called Hansen's Disease. It was more than a visit, it was an experience of sharing something with those who suffered and died here. A cemetery just outside spoke of that. Inside and just sitting quietly for awhile, one could feel the whole building speak through the floors and walls. The stories told come alive when you are there!

Our guide was amazing: KAhi , not sure how to spell it. What lovely man. I wish I gave him a big hug on our exit but I was preoccupied, our flight was getting ready to depart . KAhi I hope you see this: consider yourself hugged. He has so much knowledge, he sang to us twice, what a amazing voice. Once in a chapel, once in the bus. Very special. Kalaupapa is a sacred place, beautiful and powerful. Words cannot describe it. Read the novel Molakai before you go. It is the story of its people.

Couldn't believe our first stop was at a concession where drinks and snacks were for sale. What a waste of time. However the entire Father Damien tour was pretty lame, so in retrospect I shouldn't have been surprised
