Literally had to sit and figure out the last time I was here. It ends up that it was somewhere around 1993 when I went to Loyola! It was (and still is) a huge college hangout, as Tulane, Loyola and other universities are nearby and it's on the St. Charles streetcar line.
Place was always quite popular (read: pretty crowded), with a large on-tap beer selection, bar games, video poker and good bar food. It hasn't changed much.
Big screens all around now and better food. Open "'til" pretty much every night. Bartenders are young, good-attituders with good bar knowledge. Great can and bottle beer selection, too.
Stopped in with a friend for lunch and a couple of beers on a weekday afternoon. We split one of the Radiator Special Po-boys, which features fried shrimp and fried oysters, house cheese blend and Crystal (sauce) Remoulade sauce. Mine came with pickles and cucumbers, which appeared (I didn't ask) to be homemade, and were an excellent addition.
This is one of the few places in NOLA (New Orleans) that has beer on tap that is potable. I've mentioned before that New Orleans is not called 'the city that care forgot' for nothing. I NEVER drink tap beer ANYWHERE here because of the cleanliness of the beer lines. This place is an exception and the beer on tap is always great. We also had the loaded fries, which any bar can make of course, but Cooter's are beer-battered with pulled pork and shredded cheddar cheese with sour cream, jalopenos, carmelized onions and honey BBQ sauce. YUMM!!
Ambiance is casual, and even with four total beers, a great, large sandwich and fries, the bill was under $30.
Definitely WILL be back (after 26 years!). Casual atmosphere. Get off the streetcar (NOT the trolley) at St. Charles and Carrollton (yes, two "L's") and walk across the street. On a nice, summer afternoon, walk across the street and sit on the levee and watch the river and boats passing on the Mississippi. Enjoy!
