Walking through the Lower East Side is like walking through a movie set of New York in the late 1800s/early 1900s. This was the home of immigrants with crowded tenement buildings and gritty streets. Initially German and Irish and later Italians, Eastern European Jews, and others from Europe filled the neighborhood. By 1920 it was one of the largest Jewish communities in the world. The Tenement Museum located here provides an excellent idea of the challenges immigrants faced when living in the neighborhood and is well worth experiencing. Although much of the architecture remains, the area has evolved and is now filled with upscale apartments and has an energetic nightlife scene where local 20-something year olds fill the bars, music venues and restaurants of the neighborhood. This is also where you can find the famous Katz's Deli, located here since 1888 and NYC's oldest deli, serving up incredible sandwiches.

One of the big bridges to Brooklyn from Manhattan, this one taking you the heart of the hipster paradise of Williamsburg. An important way to move people and traffic and the bridge has its own charm.

The Mahayana temple is located at the entrance to Manhattan Bridge. The building is somewhat plain from the exterior. Worth a look inside.

The Ramones were a punk band around in the late 70's early 80's. Their songs were short and sweet. They burned fast and brightly!

In the lower East Side there is a small tribute to the band close to the site of former punk venue CBGB's where they and their peers used to play.

Using google maps I was able to find this place and I was glad I did as it's really cool that there is a nice tribute to the band. I wonder how they would feel about it?

My daughter and I stopped by and had Ms. S as our docent. I learnt a lot from her, very kind and patient, it is like going back and learnt the history of the Greek Orthodox Jewish in NYC. This is an active little synagogue, and open on Sun 12-4 for touring, there is sign in front of the door. Donation jar available. Super glad I stop by.

Cemetery is opened April to October. Check online for visiting hours. In the middle of a block on Second Avenue you can walk through an iron gate down a narrow path. It's like a secret patch and is the oldest non-sectarian burial ground in NYC.
