Dave gave “once in a lifetime” new meaning with his passionate tour of Big Island with a rare sighting of lava on both Mauna Loa and Kilauea. With equal parts luck and crafted timing, we were blessed with a just cleared view of Kilauea ending with a drive down saddle road to see firey molten rock flowing from the just erupted Mauna Loa, the first time in decades. Dave’s excitement was palpable and he guided us to embody and embrace just how special this Hawai’i excursion was. As if active volcanoes on day two of our first trip to Hawai’i wasn’t rare and monumental enough, we also delighted our taste buds at the Heavenly Kona coffee farm, ran black sand between our fingers at Punalu’u beach, saw dolphins swimming alongside sea arches and cliffs east of Apia Point, distinguished between pāhoehoe and a’ā lava through the winding mountain roads, explored lava tube Thurston, and followed the slow falling water from rainbow falls. All in a day’s work for the knowledgeable and passionate Dave, who catered to and cared for the experience of each guest on what will prove to be the best experience on our family vacation.
