Boardwalk was great. Tons of activities, places to dine and pubs to have a drink. The only bad thing was the constant smell of freshly burnt marijuana. It is what it is.

This is an amazing museum for anyone interested in military history and airplanes. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, especially our tour guide, Tim. Almost all of their planes are in flying condition and we got lucky enough to see a test of the engines on a P-40 Warhawk. We hope to go back when they have an event and we can see some of the planes fly!

Sandbridge is the perfect family beach! We have stayed varying distances from the beach. Oceanfront is fabulous! Our favorite is on the canal. It's not a long walk to the beach. We take bicycles and kayaks. It's perfect for the kids to ride bicycles and for longer excursions as a family. We love to drop kayaks in the water on the canals and just paddle for hours. There are small restaurants north and south. Both have delicious food. We like to meal prep our side dishes to go with any fresh fish/seafood that we can get locally. There are a few places nearby. Walmart is a short distance too for grocery pick-up. Overall, this is where we are making family vacation memories with our kids, ages 12 & 13. (They have been to Florida and Caribbean; they will tell you this is their favorite.)

The history of the location and the allure of the name brought myself and my family to the distillery for a tour and a tasing. The product was amazing and the tasting room super inviting. The guide was confident in the process and the product and was easy to converse with. Very pleasant experience.

We spend the summer in Virginia Beach, which has an excellent marine science center, so we didn’t have high hopes for this tiny aquarium. We were pleasantly surprised! The touch tank is so-so, but we arrived just in time for the presentation at the outdoor exhibit, which was cool- they feed the fish and (very exciting!) the nurse sharks, which eat dramatically. The exhibit is small, so it’s easy to see everything very close up. You can also go up the steps to view from higher up.
The ticket is good for two days, so we went back a second day and happened to catch Turkey the Tortoise out on a walk through the indoor space, so we got to give him a little shell scratch. The invasive species lecture was also very interesting- and then in the back we spent a couple of quarters to feed the fish, which went crazy enough for the food to be entertaining. The signs above the indoor tanks are screens that rotate through interesting information. The moray eel sting-rays, turtles, octopus… all very fun to see. This activity won’t take too long, but do try to catch the presentations, and it’s worth popping in a second day in case something new is happening!

Just north of all the hustle and bustle you'll find First Landing State Park. I've camped there at least three times over recent years and the thing I like the most is that the park gives you the coastal, beachy feeling while being entirely secluded from all the activity you associate with VA Beach. Compared to camping in any of Virginia's beautiful state parks in the western part of the state, I was concerned due to the location that First Landing would struggle to offer the same peaceful experience and Zen-like moments that you find when camping in the rural areas. This was blissfully not the case. In each situation, First Landing gave me and my family a calm, beautiful experience where you get back in touch with nature and time slowly down to a crawl. The campsites vary greatly in size though on average each of them have their benefits and possible drawbacks, depending on what you're looking for or how many people you have in your party. Use your best judgement when booking based on the map or online tools available and during your first stay, take a drive/walk/bike around the campground and make a note of your top 5 or 10 camp sites as well as any that you might want to avoid if you find any that wouldn't suit your future purposes. The bath houses, showers and bathrooms are nice. I've always found them to be clean and the facilities in good working order. The campground offers a few EV charging sites, a bonus for any Tesla owners. Many of the sites will offer a short walk to the beach and shores of the Chesapeake Bay, something I try to do on every visit. If you need anything there are grocery stores and other conveniences within a few minutes drive. The staff are friendly though I have to say after a few visits the only interaction you probably will have is during check in. If you want to take a prolonged walk, run or bike ride, there are long trails just across the road that take you through cypress swamp and nature area - something I have yet to capitalize on because I think this would be a good bike ride on a sunny day though in each case so far we have failed to bring our bikes. I plan to visit First Landing again and again because over several years this park has given us good memories and fun times. I would avoid camping in August because the heat and humidity can be a little too much to be entirely enjoyable.

From the outside, Cape Henry Lighthouse was just a regular tall lighthouse. The way to experience it is to climb it! The inside is cool. The top look-out area is architecturally very interesting and what a great view! That was the 1st time I had ever climbed to the top of a lighthouse: lots of steps that spiral round and round. People of all ages were coming and going, you just have to know your own abilities. It's a fun way to spend part of a sight-seeing day in the area.
Be aware this is on a military base. You need a valid ID, and they will do a background check.See the website for the rules.

We had great visit to the farm with 2 kids under 7. They have a great petting zoo, aviary where you can feed parakeets, a large selection of animals, and a fantastic tree top / play area for the kids.

There is a big and exciting jungle gym that children seem to thoroughly enjoy playing on. Additionally, I have always taken pleasure in flying kites on the summit of a towering heap of the covered trash mountain.
