- Jim KOklahoma City, OK26 contributionsLocated in southwest Missouri (Wilson's Creek) and northwest Arkansas (Pea Ridge), these two civil war battlefields and visitor's centers are worthwhile for experienced and novice history buffs alike. Wilson's Creek is just south and a little west of Springfield, MO, and the visitor's center there has a wealth of artifacts from one of the first major battles in the Trans-Mississippi venue of the U.S. Civil War. Missouri, being a border state, in which slave holding areas were largely, but not totally, due to slave labor, is interesting as German immigrants who settled in crop growing areas of Missouri were pro-Union and the 'native' early U.S. settlers were more pro-CSA. The paved route along the battlefield sites has one original farmhouse and a Park Service employee is present to tell the story of the family whose home was turned into a field hospital where the wounded of both sides were treated. Wilson's Creek's visitor's center will take about an hour to two hours for even a cursory walk-through of the artifacts and the short film (30 minutes or so) was quite well done. Pea Ridge has a nice visitor's center, and the film there, like Wilson's Creek's film, gives the viewers a short history lesson of slavery in this region, in the U.S. pre-Civil War, and how these battles were fought, and when, and the impact on the war generally. The artifacts at Pea Ridge are not quite as extensive as Wilson's Creek, but are still worthwhile to view and read about. Both visitor's centers have books for sale and I bought the book by author Jeff Shaara entitled 'Civil War Battlefields' (ten are reviewed in "Rick Steves" format, including Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Shiloh, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. After reading this, 'Gods and Generals' and 'The Last Full Measure' is next on my history reading list.Written August 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - yvonnemalmgrenHamilton, GA32 contributionsWe pass through once a year in our travels. I absolutely love the wines. All of them. As experiences go we usually have very attentive service. It was not quite there this last visit. The staff was pleasant but lacking in engagement. Not as attentive as we have experienced before. However, we still enjoyed ourselves and bought plenty of wine until we pass through again. I believe the owner was there for a few minutes. I was a little shy to introduce myself though.Written July 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- travelloverOrlando, FL3 contributionsit is a Nice place the cave is beautiful, when you get there try to walk in to the cave and watch up to the sky that view is impresive, and the hiking is not bad from the visitor center to get there, also you can use a stroller for the kids or babies and youll be fine. Just the beach or lake has a lot of weed so can't appreciate it well, I would like to see it clean it will be way bautiful.Written June 12, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thane LBroken Bow, NE100 contributionsVisited on a Monday lunch. Men were outnumbered 50:1 by ladies who lunch with their young children. I had the Pizzanini sandwich special. Crispy bread with good flavor. My companion had tomato basil soup with bright flavor. Had to order a side of bread.
Overall an interesting experience and tasty food but a very noisy and echoey space. Not for a quiet get together.Written June 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The kids liked the bubble room and the Model Train display. No one was operating the trains the day we were there, but there were buttons all around the display that would activate different things in the model. It was fun looking at the different things the buttons activated. It was probably our favorite part.Written August 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- CrazyBlue2LimaChevy Chase, MD93 contributionsGreat place for a Sunday run. Not crowded (not sure why there aren't more people out, honestly). Park near downtown, run the length of the Riverwalk and back, then get lunch and a beer at Strawberry Alley or Mickey's. Perfect. For more distance, run around the APSU campus before heading back.Written October 31, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
