A lovely 5 minutes to stretch your legs and admire local artist ingenuity, whilst lacking the understanding of what it would take to move Stanley to Birdsville 😎

John Murray's wonderful artworks are found throughout LR as well as in Walgett and Eumundi (so far from what I've located). Worth enjoying these larger-than-life depictions of quirky takes on outback life.

Can't miss this one, right on the corner on the turn off to Lightning Ridge. The photo to get to let everyone back home you have made it!

This is one of those eccentricities in town... it's on the green door tour. The family who built it started with big rocks on the bottom but found they were too heavy for the children to lift - so on went the cans.Cans is a good idea ... recycling!!

The floor was layed on a scorching February day in 1998 and was rock hard before it could be levelled. That's the weather up there ! Hot ... hot ... hot!

This house was built by Gary Holms, his wife Pat and four kidlets from December 1977-February 1978 - The last year they had steel beer cans!

I would recommend heading here to have a look... it's interesting and open all of the time.

This seems to make sense only in a place like Lightning Ridge. This is an observatory and a memorial to Copernicus and other great astronomers. It was built by Alex Szperlak over a fifteen year period from 1983 to 1998.

But let's talk about Alex for a moment, because he IS one of those interesting characters that make their way to places like Lightning Ridge. Alex won the lottery after spending time in a Queensland prison for a crime he says he did not commit... after the lottery win he changed his name to Robinson Crusoe. Alex passed away in 1998 apparently died as a result of a gas explosion. There are some interesting stories about how that occurred as you can imagine.

The monument is closed, but you can see it from over the fence and you can imagine what it took to build something like this in a town like Lightning Ridge where everything that can be recycled is.

Lightning Ridge is an unusual place ... there isn't a whole lot going on and yet... it hums... it's almost like it has secrets. What it does have to add some consistency is a war memorial... it seems that even our far flung locations were affected by war.

The memorial is a humble memorial quite near the Visitor Information Centre. This would give the community ample space to congregate for their ANZAC services.

There are two minor memorials near the main one... one is dedicated to Thomas Cyril Conley... the other is dedicated to William George Kite. Kite received a distinguished conduct medal.
