- Linda PBallston Spa, NY399 contributionsHenry Mercer was one dedicated man who loved concrete. Tour Mercer Museum first, a mile away, then come here. Amazingly beautiful home and architectural masterpiece that still gives me the creeps. The tile and mosaic work are astounding and everywhere- ceilings ,walls, windowsills, bathrooms, floors!! The floor plan of this house would confuse a lab rat as you twist, climb, and pop out in the 14 rooms of the tour, the other 30 rooms not available due to time or danger. The upper turrets would require climbing small winding steps even our guide did not want to repeat. Built by ten men and a horse from plans hand drawn on paper bits, nothing is consistent in size. Sometimes like a playhouse, sometimes a soaring library, all quite beautiful and singular. Tile factory behind house which can also be toured and some walking paths available on groundsWritten 13 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Linda PBallston Spa, NY399 contributionsHours can be spent here but 2 minimum. 7 floor concrete castle built by eccentric collector of all things ordinary in 1900. The building alone is amazing, the floors, arches, windows, staircases and nooks. The tens of thousands of artifacts from a century ago displayed from ceilings, walls and small rooms could be a nightmare if not so meticulously organized despite the numbers. Look up and a whaling boat is hanging over your head and 5 floors up cribs on the ceiling. The stairs take you up and two more floors beyond. Complete carriages, apple presses as well as needles, brooms, tortoise shell combs, threshers, every one different from the next. Downstairs is Mercer's musical instrument collection.Written 13 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Megan MPrinceton, NJ563 contributionsThis is an AWESOME park!! I took my kids and met up with a friend on the Thursday of NJ Teacher Convention. We live in NJ and had no school, and PA schools were in session, so the park wasn't overly crowded. It was the prefect day to go! My 6 and 1/2 year old and 3 and 1/2 year old were able to navigate the park on their own. We ended up spending about 4 and 1/2 hours at the park! We packed a lunch (picnic tables are located outside of the park area). There were water fountains and port-a-pottys. The park in fenced in with one entrance/exit, so it's easy to keep track of the kids. This was totally worth the 50 minute drive and I can't wait to take the kids again!Written 10 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I learned so much about who she was and what motivated her. Her home is kept in a natural state and you can visualize the high-level of activity that once pervaded. It's such a cozy home. Eileen, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and respectful. She answered all my questions and provided some added insight. I wish I had gone there when the house was not decorated for Christmas. I understand its the holiday, but Pearl Buck had interesting paintings on the walls that were hidden behind too many decorations.Written 22 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jervic3Randolph, NJ188 contributionsAmerican history lives on here. One of the last tile making factories in the US. You will see a short film about Mr.Mercer, an archeologist, and how he became a tile maker. The building is original, a little clumsy to navigate, but very worthwhile seeing. The workers will explain the process of blending clay, how it is moulded, fired and glazed. Have enough hands on activities to keep children interested. Extensive gift shop as well.Written 7 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jeanne S4 contributionsWithin walking distance from the middle of Doylestown is a museum filled with Civil War history.
Last night their guides gave an informative tour of the Doylestown Cemetery which focused on the residents of Doylestown who served, and some died, during the Civil War.
I learned the meaning of "Saved by the bell".Written 31 October 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So the legend goes....Broadway actress Mary Martin and other theatrical people were in attendance at this party given by hosts, wealthy Mr. & Mrs. Mercer.
After the performance, Ms. Martin and her friends rushed to nearby Highland Farm, home of Oscar Hammerstein II. "Oscar, do we have a story for you!" Well, I imagine that to be the tone of the conversation. From that moment, The Sound of Music was conceived and produced. Indeed, members of the Mercer Family were friends of Captain Von Trapp and his family; so this adds to the strong affiliation Bucks County has enjoyed with the stage and movie industries.
Our tour of Aldie Mansion was both educational and entertaining. Our guide, Sandy, was most informed about the Mercer family and just about every aspect of the mansion property.
Within, there were many leaded windows, stone and wooden floors, beautiful woodwork trim, fireplaces and pieces of recovered original art. Outdoors, there are restored fountains, very old and spreading trees, wonderful gardens and even a few gargoyles atop the mansion.
Tours are given by appointment only. There is plenty of free parking. Tickets were $10 for seniors. There are free outdoor concerts during the summer at Aldie; and very nice decorations at Christmas.Written 19 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was like stepping back to the 1800s. The furnishings are rich and complete and include china, photographs, portraits and clothing. I felt completely immersed in the period, and learned a great deal about what life in the house must have been like. Make sure to see the square piano!Written 7 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- travelzoom2016Southington, CT128 contributionsThis is an excellent experience. We our server who was the owners nephew. He was friendly, knowledgeable and had a lot of personality. The wines were more complex then the norm. Different in many ways. Not the run of the mill commercial winery. Would love if they had more indoor space and an indoor bathroom, but otherwise very nice. We even recommended it to a couple at another winery we were at.Written 6 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David BDoylestown, PA43 contributionsFull size sandwiches and old world pub atmosphere in a busy section of Doylestown. Staff works at a quick pace to attend to customer needs. Parking is difficult and the location is not directly on Main Street, but well worth the effort.
Located on each side of a walkway, the restaurant and pub are on opposing sides of the walkway. For my wife and I, a favorite.Written 10 November 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s a big wooden play castle with rooms and slide that kids can run through and play in. Parents can sit outside and watch. Younger children must be accompanied by a parent but there are other things to do for them near it.Written 4 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gary David H1 contributionI live in Doylestown boro and am very interested in it's incredible history. I decided to see what other information could be found at the society. I had a wonderful conversation with a couple people there and ended up buying several great history books and went back for a walking tour. I actually also ended up becoming a member. If you're into DT history or just history, period, this is a wonderful place staffed with knowledgeable people who care.Written 17 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
