- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, CA4,373 contributionsWe’ve been to the South Unit, but, this view is really something. It takes maybe 20 minutes from the entrance to arrive at this viewpoint - well worth it. A quick downhill jaunt from the parking lot will reward you with a magnificent viewpoint. We did not see any bison on the drive in - my wife was disappointed.Written August 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - pfefmeisterSan Francisco, CA4,373 contributionsThis is a short hop from the parking lot, maybe 10 minutes from the entrance. Read how they are formed, take a few photos, and move on to the epic overlook. Some hardy folks were climbing up the rock formation for an overview. We were hot - it was 92 degrees - so settled on just a few photos. Unusual and intriguing.Written August 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Grover RPensacola, FL22,266 contributionsThe national grassland is a massive amount of property that surrounds all three units of TRNP. While the north Unit is surrounded by this green plain that is so endless it almost looks like the sea, South Unit has a mixture of plains, plateaus and badlands. It is here in the National Grassland, that our group took a two hour trail ride with Medora Stables. The views atop the grassland plateaus are every bit as amazing as the view from the overlooks like Painted Canyon. It is also here that we saw what brought Roosevelt to the Dakotas, cattle ranching. Dozens of cows were grazing here in the protected grasslands high above. However, in addition to cattle grazing, the designated area has Ponderosa Pine forest and badland buttes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and was so glad we were able to connect to the Old West that brought Roosevelt here.Written September 14, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bernard WDallas, TX1,914 contributionsThis Visitor Center is so much more than a visitor center. Though it offers tourist information, the three floors of historical artifacts from the Watford City area are well worth seeing. It is free. Be sure to see the HUGE petrified wood inside near the entrance. It is open 10-5. Thursday is Dogs on the Deck (hot dogs, music, and fun) that benefit a different charity every week. In the rear of this building is a liquor store that has different hours.
Wonder about the name? The Long X Trail was where 4000 longhorns were driven from Texas to this area in 1884.Written July 11, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. That's how cowboys described the cattle they drove up the Long X trail from Texas to North Dakota and Montana. The longhorns were scrounged out of the sage brush after the Civil War and massed in to herds of 5,000 to 10,000, then herded north through open range, following the gradual greening of the rangeland from south to north.Written October 21, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SmiledoctorsmileSaint Paul, MN211 contributionsAfter backcountry camping for a few weeks, tradition is we get pizza from Pizza Pie on the Fly and eat at the park. There are nice tables in the shade and plenty of garbage cans. It overlooks a sand volleyball court and an interesting veterans memorial. The kids really like the playground though they are starting to grow out of it.Written June 27, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
