Santuario de Chimayo is a little more than a half-hour drive from Santa Fe. This site, sometimes referred to as “the Lourdes of North America,” was associated with miraculous healing long before the chapel was built. The faithful (and the hopeful) come to scoop “holy dirt” from a depression in the floor of a little room to the left side of the chapel which is then rubbed on the part of the body in need of healing. Crutches, braces, and prayers of thanksgiving fill another room as evidence of healing attributed to Chimayo even though the Catholic Church has made no attempt to confirm or deny any accounts of the efficacy of the holy dirt. On an adjacent piece of property is the Santo Nino chapel with a side room filled baby shoes left behind by the faithful for the baby Jesus because, the legend goes, he would wear through his sandals bringing comfort and healing to those in need.

We were taking the high road from Taos to Santa Fe with our kids who were visiting from Dubai. We were planning to show them this beautiful church on the way. The church is old and beautiful. Inside was the Holy dirt which is famous for its healing properties. This church has amazing history. Must see if taking the high road.

Santuario de Chimayo was amazing the place is so beautiful, Santo nino chapel is so pretty and colorful, down fall are the lil stores just outside the chapels ( the selling people are rude ) even if i wanted to buy something i just refrained, due to the rude comments of the "owner" " worker" who ever was attending the stores.

This is a museum that is easy to miss, but take the time to seek it out. If you are new to Northern NM or not familiar with its rich history, you will be well educated and amazed. This is a very rich area of Spanish (not Mexican or Native American) presence in the New World.

Quiet, calm water was perfect for this beginner at SUP and the area was not crowded at all. The views were spectacular. The road is windy but totally adequate. The facilities were clean and staff friendly.

I bought a beautiful woven purse directly from the weaver and some pretty earrings. This store is affordable and interesting-the weavers weave right there with their big looms!

This was on our list of places to see in Chimayo, the rugs were absolutely beautiful. I wanted to come home with something, ended up buying some weaved coasters, I admire them everyday.

If you appreciate fine weaving this gallery is the best. We spent an hour there reviewing all of the fantastic weavings for sale and the conversation with the owner Irvin. Highly recommend visiting this gallery. Some of his pieces of work are really fantastic and I only wish I was still collecting.

I have visited Oviedo’s gallery for several years and am always moved by the beauty of his sculptures. He is a master bronze sculptor and specializes in the themes of New Mexico including the Catholic and the Indigenous traditions. You can purchase or just browse, but if you wish to purchase, there are all sizes of sculptures in all price ranges. He is a master craftsman and his work is extraordinary.

The family have owned these businesses for 119 years

We got the owner to show us his loom in action. He was very skilled and made some great stuff. And could explain it all well. These rugs and hangings take a lot of work
