- vhash77North Wilkesboro, NC1,045 contributionsWe visited this museum while on a bus tour. The museum actually opened just for our visit, typically they are closed on Monday's The staff was friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately since it was not a standard open day there were 2 buildings we did not get to visit. There was truly a lot of preserved Civil War history.Written September 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Matthew CSaint Louis, MO96 contributionsThis museum far exceeded my expectations. The whole museum primarily revolves around the lived experiences of many survivors who settled in St. Louis after the war. Each of the exhibits share their heart wrenching story. I visited the Holocaust Museum in D.C in 2006 and noticed that one difference between the STL one and the D.C. one is that the STL one focused more on what led to the Holocaust. Perhaps the one in D.C. has changed since I last visited, but I remember it focusing more on the Holocaust itself. Here in STL, you will learn about both the Holocaust and the events and culture that led to it happening.
I have to say, when I leave most museums, I leave with a good understanding of the subject matter of that museum. With this museum, I left having great difficulty understanding what I had just seen. This is not a slam against the museum, this just proves that the Holocaust was just so horrific that the human mind can’t really fully comprehend what happened. This museum did an effective job really explaining thoroughly how awful the Holocaust truly was and not holding back. We shouldn’t hold back what happened. We should allow people to tell their stories and listen to them.
There wasn’t too much graphic content - far less than the one in D.C., so I think it would be safe for children at least 10 and up.
Everyone needs to visit this museum and be informed and aware of how these types of things start.Written August 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bob5 contributionsThe displays are top-notch replicas of airplanes, rockets, space capsules, and other flight-related equipment. There are hundreds of models of all sizes that show the evolution of aircraft, and visitors will find it informative and educational, as well as revisiting the important history of aviationWritten June 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JMCSTLSaint Louis, MO6,001 contributionsMy wife & I had not visited the historic Field House since our kids were in grade school, so we decided to give it another look on a wintry Sunday afternoon. The young lady who led our tour was very friendly & knowledgeable of the Field family history, and we had plenty of time to browse the contents because we were the only visitors in her group. The period home furnishings & family stories provide good perspectives of U.S. urban life in the 1800s, and the architectural features were of particular interest to me.
This was our first opportunity to see the 2016 museum building addition to the old house, and there were some small but interesting exhibits on display (incl. a private collection of Steiff bears & other stuffed animals, and a look at modern-day challenges for educators trying to encourage school-aged children of color to become avid readers). The new wing presents a great opportunity for the Museum curators to expand on & supplement the history represented by the Field House property, and I hope they continue to host exhibitions that can draw regular public interest.Written January 24, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's not big, but it's laid out well and has a wealth of black history information. I found it to be VERY educational. And it has activities for children too. The wax figures were extremely well done! Taking pictures indoors is not allowed.Written February 11, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Wanda HMascoutah, IL271 contributionsThey've got the complete 32-volume set of The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant! And for a museum that focuses on such a small area, this place is so full of all types of displays. It's well organized and you could spend LOTS of time checking it all out. Very educational and interesting! The folks who volunteer here are also very knowledgeable.Written February 11, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
