I have seen many Gilded Age mansions and they all have a lot of similarities. The Ringling mansion is much more interesting because they incorporated a lot of unusual items from their circus. Columns with monkeys hanging out as opposed to Greek doric collums.

Selby does a wonderful tribute to the friendship and collaborative artistic creations of Robert Mapplethorpe and Patty Smith with clever floral installations that become photographic portraits, accompanied by Smith’s recorded songs as well as a gallery of portraits of each other in the main house. Worth the time and meandering through the garden, which is not huge, Show runs through end June.

Went on a Sat when we had to kill a few hours between being kicked out of one resort and checking into another. No school kids, nice sunny day, but cool weather. We loved it. My wife had never seen manetees - she loved 'em. Small tanks with most exhibits but kept pretty clean. Good jelly fish exhibit, otters, mangrove tanks, turtle building with a good explanitory educational program at regular intervals. Lots of good stuff. As a 25 year scuba diver and a dedicated oceanagraphic documentary devotee I was very surprised by how impressed I was

So many shops, so little dimes. I loved The Giving Tree and the longtime jeweler, Tilden Ross. Great ice cream everywhere.

Wow the volunteers here were really helpful and friendly. Loved all the great information they gave us on the history of the mansion. It was like stepping back over 100 years. Loved the attention to detail on all the outside brick and to still see how it was preserved inside was amazing. Well worth the 10 bucks! Best tour we went on in Florida.

Ian caused a massive amount of flooding, damaging a great deal of the park. It is closed indefinitely, so be sure to check their website before visiting.

An artist friend of ours told us about this place and said it’s not to be missed. She was absolutely correct. I’m not a huge fan of classic art museums, but this is nothing like it. The all volunteer staff welcomed us with a brief explanation and their only request is that we leave with a smile,….our smiles never stopped. It’s a true gift (there is no admission fee, only donations are requested) to the community and the world.
Note that the hours are very limited, so plan ahead.

For those having to lay their loved ones to rest, this is without question, the ULTIMATE. Just had Mom & Dad's service here over the past weekend. Was literally taken back on the extreme precision that was executed. It was if my father had been an Admiral. Everyone dressed to the tee, clean, crisp, perfectly groomed, buttons, medals, shoes polished, and the expertise of delivery was as if it was in a Hollywood movie. So incredibly hard to say goodbye to my parents but an absolute honor to honor them this way. The process of folding the flag and its presentation to us, was the most emotional thing I have ever witnessed. The final departure was so touching. No disappointments, none, zero, zilch. Hats off to the US Navy and Sarasota National Cemetary. FYI: The grounds are impeccable. Absolutely, impeccable. After they presented us with the American Flag and the gun shells that were in a Black velvet bag embossed in Gold with the seal of the USA, they handed me a Leather bound, gatefold folder. Inside was a document with the Presidential Seal with my Father's full name and signed by the President of the United States....hand signed. You will forever be honored Dad. Hugh Janda

The Village is a fun place to eat, drink and shop. it has the usual t-shirt and souvenir shops along with a few more upscale shops. There are quite a few different restaurants and places to get a drink. The kids like the ice cream shops. You can take the Frogger, or Gater Bus free (just tips) from most places on the key.

The safest place by far to ride your bike in Sarasota. Old railroad tracks converted to bike and walking trail. Never crowded when we've gone. Extended from Venice to downtown Sarasota. Sarasota's wisest investment in infrastructure that caters to locals and visitors alike.

We visited in September and way too hot. There are a lot of shade trees though. Path is easy walking. We saw many animals and was a good overall experience. The show they had was very nice.

I went to this beautiful park with our Kindergarteners. So much to discover. We took a long hike along a winding path to a lovely clearing where the children could wade in the water and discover shells, jelly fish and mangrove seed pods. We had our snack out there and then hiked back down the path to discover the beach where the children found many different shells and cooled down along the edge of the water. We spent 6 wonderful hours there. There is also a bigger beach right by the bath house, which might be a good choice for people who can't walk too far.
