Nature & Wildlife Areas
The Refuge protects a remnant of the once vast northern Everglades. At the Visitor Center you can take a virtual airboat ride, listen to night sounds of the Everglades and explore a gator hole - all without getting wet! Behind the Visitor Center you can explore the Cypress Swamp Boardwalk, a 0.4-mile trail that loops through towering cypress trees, pond apple trees, ferns and other flora of the swamp. Then relax in the nearby Butterfly Garden, or head across the road to the Marsh Trail. The 0.8-mile Marsh Trail is one of several walking trails along the grass levees that encircle impoundment areas, where different water levels provide habitat for various types of wading birds and other wildlife. Bring your camera and binoculars! You might see an endangered Wood Stork or Snail Kite, or any of 270 other species of birds. While walking the trails, look for tracks in the soft sand. Common tracks include those of bobcats, otters, alligators, raccoons, armadillos and birds.See the Everglades up close and personal in a canoe or kayak on the 5.5-mile Canoe Trail! Or enjoy the view from the levee as you ride along the 12-mile Bike Trail alongside the main canal. Canoes, kayaks and bicycles are available for rent. Try your luck fishing from the pier for largemouth bass, bluegill and bullhead catfish. Boating and sport fishing are also allowed in the main canal. State regulations for fishing licenses apply. Airboats are not allowed on the Refuge, but Loxahatchee Everglades Tours operates just south of the Refuge. Guided bird and nature walks and canoe trips take place on a regular basis. Ranger-led school tours are available by appointment.

The birds nesting in season provide an outstanding experience. The only caveat is that parking can be tight during tourist season. The boardwalk is not very long and there are numerous opportunities to rest and enjoy nature.

The canoe/kayak rental outfitter is out of business. You need to bring your own vessel to paddle the short 5.5 mile loop. I just wanted to pass on this information because it does not seem to be posted anywhere.

Beautiful beach, one of our favorites. Public showers at each end, restrooms, lifeguards that actually pay attention. Concession is closed “until further notice” as of our visit on 8/6/23.

Beautiful place for both fishing and beach activities. Went for some photography and ended up staying longer than expected.

Stopped in and was impressed. Prices good for fresh produce l, even wine prices were reasonable. They have restrooms, dairy products, fruits & veggies , wine, honey, beverages & outside there’s Pick ur Own & a petting zoo-but not on Tuesdays .

Brought our dog here on a quiet Monday while driving through the area. Good beer, excellent place for the dog. Would definitely stop by again.

I was skeptical of going, cuz I always feel petting zoos don’t give a great experience of being hands on with the animals as they say they do… well this totally changed my mind, not only was it completely reasonable and for the $25 (which I think is a great price for so many people to be able to experience this) it was such an amazing experience for me and my family. The staff was awesome Reece was our tour guide and she was great. We literally got so up close and personal with so many different animals. The feed to feed the animals is included in the price . She explained and answered almost every question everyone had. I truly recommend this place , you won’t be disappointed. I wish it was closer to us , I would be there everyday volunteering

There’s nothing more fun than going to an establishment that custom brews their own beverages to the delight of the locals. NOBO hits the target on all marks. The environment is welcoming and friendly, the beers are delicious. Many times there is a food truck and delicious bites as well.

Is there a fresh water station to rinse, flush our motors at the end of the day?
We have no possibility at our condo complex.

God is truly present here at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Through the Priests, beautiful grounds and above all the amazing church, masses and homilies. You will be glad you came and blessed when you leave.

We visited in January on a warm, sunny day. There is a small car park with a display board of what visitors may see in the natural area.

The path divides and offers walking a bicycling routes. The easy to understand signs are beyond the understanding of some as the only people we saw on our walk around were two riding bikes on the foot only routes.

Walking quietly and keeping an eye on the underbrush for animal life the walk was leisurely and uninterrupted by sight of wild animal, annoying insect or bird. The only live thing besides plant life was a Zebra Longwing butterfly. I would say there were two except the first sighting was on the way in and the second sighting was on the way out so it may have been the same one!

Never the less, even without seeing wild life the topography and plants were such that it was a fascinating way to see what Florida looked like before it was manicured to look like golf courses interspersed with houses and strip malls.

Well worth an hour or less of your time, though given the scarcity of people don't wander around on your own or at night.
