- jehenson81Washington DC, DC25,937 contributionsOkay, I visited Malibu Creek State Park for the first time back in January 2023 and it was between heavy rain storms, so the whole place was muddy. This time everything was dry. I paid for extra time in the park ($3 per hour with a max for all day at $12) and got a map ($2). I parked at the lower parking lot and got a great spot. Then it was time to hike. It was a little cool when my hike started, but I quickly warmed up. There were not a lot of people on the trail and it was really wide for most of my hike. I saw some wildlife to include a woodpecker, some lizards, a few different species of bird and tons of bees. It was a much better experience this time around. As I left, there were tons of people going in the opposite direction from me and the lot had begun to fill up. I really think I hit it at the right time, around 9am on a Sunday.Written September 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jehenson81Washington DC, DC25,937 contributionsI drove all over the National Recreation Area during my recent vacation. I was actually staying at a hotel that is situated up in the mountains. On this visit, the specific sites I visited were Peter Strauss Ranch, Zuma & Trancas Canyons, the Backbone Trail and King Gillette Ranch. I’ve done reviews on each of them, but I will note that there is a Visitors Center at King Gillette where you can get maps and information about the area as a whole and each of the sites that fall within it. All of the sites have hiking trails and I did hike at all of them except for Peter Strauss Ranch (was hot and tired; the racetrack trail looked nice and easy). There are also several State Parks nestled in the mountains, so check out the websites for each to determine if they are NPS sites or not. I had a great time and hope to come back and do some of the other hikes on my next visit (if/when that happens).Written September 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jehenson81Washington DC, DC25,937 contributionsI visited the King Gillette Ranch on a Thursday morning and parked at the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area visitors center. They have two hour free parking, though the ranger at the desk inside told me that as long as there isn’t an event going on, I could stay as long as I wanted. There was no event that day. I didn’t think I was going to need more than two hours and off I went to hike up to Inspiration point. The rangers had given me directions to get to the trailhead and there were a couple of signs along the way. I really feel that they needed more signs leading to the trail and along the trail itself. There were a couple of unofficial trails off the main trail. The point had beautiful vistas and an almost 360 degree view (couple of trees in the way). I opted to continue along the main trail, though I was tempted to take the ridge trail, but without knowing its length or where I would end up, I decided against it. Per my map app, it dead ends and I would have had to come all the way back to the main trail. On the way down, I did spot an interesting bug which I looked up. It was apparently a tarantula hawk, a kind of wasp with the second most painful bite of any insect. This made me pick up my pace (don’t be concerned, only the females sting and they won’t as long as you don’t provoke them). I got down to the manor/estate and saw that they were in the process of decorating the whole place for Halloween. The rangers had already shared that the manor and dormitory were not open to the public, so I took some pictures and looped around back to the visitor center. It was a great hike and there weren’t many people on the trails (I saw none).Written September 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Great for history buffs and children.

- Sheldon MCalabasas, CA7 contributionsThe Memorial Park is difficult to find. Use yur GPS. You can spend over an hour reading headstones and ground signs. The MGM Lion is buried here along with many Hollywood pets and performers.Written March 14, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael TLos Angeles, CA891 contributionsA beautiful park to explore right in downtown Calabasas. It is actually owned and maintained by the Leonis Adobe Museum, just two doors down. I had been going there for years, but just ventured to the park for the first time. I go with my toddler, and he LOVES water falls and water fountains and this place has both! There is a giant water fountain just on the other side of the giant gate. There are many cool things to see here. The Duck Pond, Chumash Village and Calabasas Jail are some of the highlights. I wish there was a playground, but that's not what they do here (yet at least). But other than that, it's a lovely place to take young children (or even a date I was guess) for a nice little stroll. In fact, I bet if you enjoy a date at the nearby Peddler's Fork or Sagebrush Cantina, this would make for a lovely after dinner stroll!Written February 17, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
