If you are interested to experience on some local trade and fishing industry, this is place to visit in GenSan. Fishing boats arrive early to unload their catch and see the auction of tuna in the fish port. You have to get permission to enter the area since restricted from general public.

While inside you can watch frozen tuna unloaded for trade, testing and initial sorting. You can take pictures and talk with local workers. It’s a great and memorable experience. Recommended

Balut island was one of the most amazing island I ever visited. 8hours of travel with what they called small lantsa. You can feel the big waves smashing, cold breeze of air that will give you bumps and will make your 8hours travel once in a life time experience and when you arrive, Views it has will make you realize how beautiful the nature is. When you visit Balut island dont let any moment go to visit ulaniban island where sand is whiter and thinner than ever, where you can dip your body in pristine blue water. Together with this nature you can mingle and meet the tribes dominates the place who is so hospitable and caring to their guest. Balut Island is a total package dor nature escapade.

The travel time and distance are worth it. Highly recommended. But to enjoy it, i suggest you rent a van from a reliable travel/tour agency at GenSan and arrange for a guided tour. Very educational, aside from enjoying the scenic spots. I hope the gov't and more NGOs can work closely together to preserve and protect the T'boli culture and the lake.

It's a bit difficult to find as some drivers don't know how to get there or where the closest drop off point is (if you rent a taxi for the day they will wait on you to trek to the top and back.) You should stop by the city office and they will give you information about the conditions of the trail, sometimes the trail is blocked or heavy rains will make the water crossings treacherous. The views from the trail and the apex are impressive. On a clear day you can overlook General Santos and Sarangani Bay. Be prepared for a long hike.

Mount Matutum is easy to find from the DOLE Department of Labour and Economics Philippine Government plantation where local PNP (Philippine National Police) will register you and ensure you have good security cover (Helicopters etc) if needed in case you get stuck in a rut or loose your compass. It is best to follow the natural rivers so you will never get lost. Do not trust google as it sends you on a pointless road trip! You will need good hiking shoes and a luggage trolley with rough, durable wheels and a spare tyre as well. It is a fantastic trek and you will never forget this one. Be the first to follow me on this epic journey of a lifetime! You will need about a week to complete the trek and you will need good camping equipment and a local guide is best if you don't speak Tagalog or Arabic that well.

General Santos City (GenSan) is the Tuna Capital of the Philippines. Every year they have a week long wonderful festival celebrating local culture and pride. There are many different food concessions with delicious foods (The fish and bbq dishes were amazing!) and other kinds of concessions. too. The parade floats were beautiful; the festival theme song is a catchy tune and the local singers were top shelf. All the local people were beaming with pride. As an American, I felt very welcome and safe! Filipinos in general are very polite and respectful. That's a big change from NYC where I come from. There were so many police patrolling this event. They entire family will enjoy and come hungry!
