The temples of Bagan are a must see. On our first full day we hired an ebike and tootled around with no plan in mind at all. The highlight of my day was being surrounded by a group of pre schoolers who wanted to help us look at our map. There were very good at tracing the routes of the roads with their fingures. We learnt from these children the Burmese common sign language for drink & food. One advert on the map drew the attention of the kids and we spent a few minutes telling them the English words for ice cream, coffee, and wine as we each pointed to the pictures. As Western tourists we deffinitely drew attention from the locals and we had our photo taken so many times. On day 2 we visited Mount Popa in the morning and then some temples in the afternoon. Our driver deffinitely knew his stuff and we saw some amazing images and painted walls. At one of the temples we were walked around by an elderly lady holding a huge light so we could see all the paintings. Yes you do get a bit of hassle from the vendors at some of the temples, but most of the time we were left alone.

Amanda Temple is phenomenal. There are 1000 statues within the temple, and inside the temple the walls are painted with small rectangular pieces that tell the story of the life of Buddha (550 total squares) The outside is mostly made of terracotta, and the outside of the temple, likewise, tells the story of the Buddha. A MUST in Old Bagan!

This is a huge pagoda complex in Bagan. It includes the main pagoda and also many smaller temples. The atmosphere is very inspiring and devotional, with many devotees circumambulating, chanting, offering incense or meditating around the pagoda.

There is a huge variety of architectures of the smaller temples and the main pagoda, which makes it so unique and a must visit.

There is a walkway from the main Bagan road (leading to other main temples like Ananda temple), which goes via a number of markets selling Burmese traditional clothes, lacquerware etc.

The pagoda can get a little crowded in the evenings.

All in all, this beautiful golden pagoda is a must see for all visitors to Bagan.

This pagoda was one of the high places from where one could observe the beautiful sunrise and sunset over Bagan. So it was usually crowded with tourists and visitors in sunset time.

But now, climbing the pagoda is not allowed, probably due to safety concerns. So one can no longer use it to watch the sunset. But it is nevertheless still a beautiful and symmetrical pagoda. The architecture is unique compared to the other Bagan pagodas. It has a number of stairs in all the four directions to go to the higher levels.

One must leave shoes outside the complex before entering. The are also lots of shops outside this pagoda complex.

The temple complex with its labyrinth of passageways was built over the 1167 to 1170 period under orders of King Narathu, but never completed due to the assassination of the king. Impressive brickwork.

This very large, imposing temple (over 46 meters tall), composed of terraces and elaborate plaster and brick, is worth a visit for the architecture and for the solid sense of presence that it provides. It can get very crowded, especially with all of the vendors - come here early in the morning to get a good sense of the temple without all of the crowds.

One of the tallest temples to see when you're in the Old Bagan city. You'll like the Buddha paintings and statues.

Bagan King did not kill Mon King but watched strictly. To build this temple, the prisoner King sold some his gemstones. Now this temple remains as the symbol of Mon-Myanmar relations in Bagan era.
