What travelers are saying
- Liveyourdream_asiaSingapore, Singapore1,418 contributionsWe started our journey from the hotel at 11.30 pm and reached the starting point at 1:30 AM. The official hike opened up at 2 am, so we had a bit of time. Despite the night, we were greeted by a lively scene of eager climbers, open cafes, and shops.
Our guide, Nur, informed us that at 1 am 1,000 people had registered for the climb!
The climb itself, starting at 2.00 AM, was both physically demanding and visually stunning.
The hike to the summit will take from 1 to 3 hours depending on your speed and physical condition.
The path was crowded, and the practice of using human rickshaws to ascend, though practical for some, struck me as incongruent with the spirit of the trek (sorry to say, it looked like slavery in Ancient times - something you can’t see often in the modern times 🙈).
The real challenge started once we started to go down towards the crater: steep and slippery rocks, crowds of people combined with the crater's sulfuric fumes were very intense, and the protective masks provided were essential.
Witnessing the blue flames was a highlight, despite the difficulty and danger in navigating the crowd. The descent was challenging yet rewarding, offering breathtaking views at dawn and a stark reminder of the harsh conditions faced by local sulfur miners.
This trek is not for the faint-hearted but offers a unique blend of natural beauty, physical challenge, and cultural insight.
Tips:
- Undergo a medical check-up and obtain a medical certificate confirming fitness for the climb, required for registration.
- Start the ascent between 2-3 AM to ensure you see the blue flames, which typically disappear by 5 AM.
- Wear proper hiking shoes to safely navigate the steep and slippery terrain.
- Bring sufficient water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the long path.
- Carry a strong protective mask and, ideally, eye protection to guard against the intense sulfuric fumes and flames.Written March 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I highly recommend this amazing national park, where we were able to see monkeys, toucans, lizards, turtles and eagles!! The stay was even more special thanks to Sri and her fantastic homestay (Adventure Homestay Meru Betiri)! Sri has been an amazing host, she cooked us local food, introduced us to her friends and family and took care of every single detail and request for our trip. Her nephew was our tour guide in the park. Sri even helped us organizing our next plans! Stay at least 2 days at her place to fully experience a real Indonesian life!
We will never forget this place, its nature, landscapes and warm loving locals.

Unfortunately, we arrived at a time when the weather was quite bad. However, strong wind didn't prevent us from enjoying our time! The scenery was still beautiful, and the beach was quite clean, considering all the people and tourists there at the time. Mind you, we visited 7 months ago - not really sure of how the condition is now. The people working there were very friendly too!Written July 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Macaques, peacocks and other birds, beach with crabs. Turtles at Sukamade (check my other review of Sukamade beach itself). Nice experience. I’m sure that longer stay would be even more interesting.Written January 25, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bernardbali72Denpasar, Indonesia15 contributionsyou go there as art of a 2 or 3 days stop in Banyuwangi as many natural spots are there including the unique kawah Ijen worth to climb at night to see the blue fire and arriving at the crater ridge at the sunrise to see the splendid acid lake and the sulfur coming out from the earth boiling and getting hard to become the nice yellow sulfur to be used as matches or cosmetic products.Written January 3, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Br14n 1m4g3sBatu, Indonesia1,131 contributionsThis beach seems like my version of the favorite beach in Banyuwangi. The beach is quite hidden, the water is clear greenish. To reach this beach, you can walk from the parking area on the Rajekwesi beach, or rent a boat from a local fisherman for 50k per person round trip, complete with life jackets. Unfortunately on the land, there is still trash at some point. Hopefully in the future, managers and visitors can better maintain the cleanliness of this beachWritten April 22, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gavin LPerth, Australia116 contributionsThis place was my hidden paridise before it was discovered. Boat trip sleep on the beach overnight. Oh the memories....went there yesterday and still a nice place. Great tor children swimming and snorkeling which is a surprise for indo beaches Has few small Warungs with basics like water and pop mie. A 30 minute hike through the jungle along a trail or a boat ride around the headland. If travelling to red island go to wedi ireng instead no crowds. Take a bottle of water and snacks in case the Warungs are closed. Enjoy.Written October 21, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ardhana TourProbolinggo, Indonesia8 contributionsNestled in the lush landscapes of Banyuwangi, Djawatan Forest offers a serene escape into nature's embrace. Stepping into this verdant sanctuary, I was immediately struck by the tranquility that enveloped me. The towering trees, adorned with vibrant foliage, created a canopy that filtered the sunlight into a gentle glow, illuminating the forest floor below.
The well-maintained trails beckoned me to explore further, each turn revealing a new marvel of biodiversity. From the playful antics of monkeys swinging through the branches to the melodious songs of birds echoing through the air, the forest teemed with life at every corner.
As I wandered deeper into the heart of Djawatan Forest, I found myself enchanted by the symphony of sounds – the babbling of brooks, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional call of unseen creatures. Hidden glades and tranquil ponds provided serene spots for reflection, inviting me to pause and savor the moment.
Djawatan Forest is not just a destination for nature lovers; it's a sanctuary for the soul. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply yearning for a moment of quietude, this enchanting forest offers a timeless escape from the chaos of modern life.Written March 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. On August is the best for breaking into the wave. Very challenging! Good accessiblity by speed boat or chopper, but land transportation still become an issue. Just bring your surfing board which is supported by airlines now by giving a special handling into the airplane and airport.Written October 30, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - yayancarter383 contributionsIt took 20 or 25 minutes from Menjangan Island. The view is good, there are gradation color from turquoise to blue.
It used to be a good place to snorkeling but the coral is under maintenance.
But its a good place to visit.Written February 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
