- MiriamFort Collins, CO47 contributionsThe spit is pretty sleepy in the winter. Not much is open, except for a few fishing shops and the Land's End Hotel. All that is left is the extreme beauty of the snow-capped mountains across Kachemak Bay, the awesome wild and cold beaches, sea otters floating in the bay, and bald eagles everywhere. Personally, I think it's better than in the summer.Written 16 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jennifer C6 contributionsThis is a quick drive to see Homer and the glacier and the mountains and bay from above. Really great view of one of the glaciers as well as the best "aerial " view of the spit.Written 26 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - blockhedMt. Cook Village, New Zealand37 contributionsWe loved this hike. We took the longer route which starts close to the main road, and meanders on flat ground for a ways before descending to the beach. You will want to have rubber boots, the mud is "fun." On the stoney beach we saw a few bald eagles, and a whale carcass. The walk back out is moderately steep but nothing extreme. Once we ascended to the flatter terrain, we walked on the gravel road back to our car.
That road is passable with a sedan, a few large potholes to navigateWritten 29 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. However, it isn't in Anchor Point as her review suggests but at the extreme end of East End Road about 23 miles from Homer.
The original trail was cut into the steep side of Kachemak bay many years ago as a way to move cattle from their summer range in the salt flats below to the farms at above sea level. Lately, Russian Old Believers living in the town of Kachemak Selo and Vosnesenka have improved the road enough so that you can drive on it with a conventional car. But be forewarned, this drive is not for the faint hearted. Sheer drops to the ocean below, no guardrails, and a surface of gravel & clay make this road quite scary. 4x4 is strongly recommended. If it's raining, walking would be your best bet.
The trail itself from the end of East Road to the bay below is not very long, only about half a mile, but what it lacks in length it makes up in elevation, gaining around of height in that distance.
Explore the bayside below, have a picnic, make a driftwood campfire, find some fossils in the red clay littered everywhere. You could walk up the beach to the Russian village of Kachemak Selo but don't expect to be welcomed there though as the Old Believers there prefer to keep to the old ways as much as possible. They're hard working people who take great pains to live away from the mainstream.
There are no facilities available. Bring your own water and food if desired.Written 12 January 2014This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I didn’t want to fly and he didn’t want to go on a fishing charter. Our first time coming to the peninsula and this was a fantastic way to enjoy the outside! All the horses were well behaved, Mark and Karina were fantastic guides and made sure to have conversations with everyone on the tour, including the three young girls (7-12) that were in the group. The weather was fantastic (heard it rained in Homer the whole time).
Yes, bring a sack lunch. You’ll have a nice break in the middle to eat/pee. It’s an “out and back” trail, not a big loop so you don’t miss anythingWritten 7 September 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You will not find many others on the trail, providing a quick path to easily accessible solitude.
It's a well-groomed trail, packed firmly and safe from tripping and slipping hazards, but there is a significant rise in elevation, and there is a short hop over a creek. Aside from that, it is an easy hike.Written 20 July 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The only amenity is an outhouse.Written 27 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- rebecca c3 contributionsThese guys get ALL the stars! Really a trip of a life time! Our pilot Joe was so good! This is a must do trip! The scenery is so beautiful. The bears are amazing. - Yog-SothothTrenton, ME1,275 contributionsI have to confess something, dear readers: Yog-Sothoth is a nervous flyer. I don't even like big planes, and during another part of this Alaska adventure I chickened out of a Denali flight seeing tour. That being said, the folks at Emerald Air Service put me completely at my ease and I even enjoyed the +/- one hour flight from Homer to Katmai National Park. (My pilot friends all assure me that the DeHavilland Otter is an amazing airplane...and anyway it can land on the water! In fact it did so twice during our outing!)
The beauty of Hallo Bay -- like a lot of the rest of Alaska -- is mind-blowing and defies description and photographs. We spent the day hiking the tidal flats and got super close to multiple bears, who were just doing their thing. Our guide Lance was a font of knowledge and put us at our ease.
This is not an inexpensive trip but I'll remember it for the rest of my life. One of the top travel experiences I've ever had.Written 4 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Sally was super friendly and helpful during the booking process, and Captain John was a fantastic guide. Not only was his service friendly, informative and prompt, he went out of his way to show us sea otters up close and for a special treat found a pod of Orcas on our way back to Homer! Best day ever!Written 11 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- LisaEricksonBellevue, WA59 contributionsAn amazing experience with Zach and Tim visiting Katmai and seeing bears close up (not too close). My friend and I went twice to see the bears with Sasquach Alaska and didn't regret it. It was magical to walk in the meadow with bears at a safe distance and photograph them. I highly recommend to anyone traveling to Homer to go with Sasquach. We were the only ones there and felt like we were one with the bears.Written 23 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Roger DReading, PA149 contributionsLet's answer the most important question first - Yes we got our limit on Halibut to bring back to the mainland! Now the important details....We were lucky as we booked a trip on the 56' boat named the Ultimate. Why was this important.....because the waves were huge and the wind was whipping about. We lasted out in the fishing grounds hours more than the poor smaller boats. Our Captain was Billy, it was the end of the season and he looked weary, and still he persisted on getting us on the fish to reel in magnificent Halibut one at a time. Pretty much the whole boated limited out, as you would hope for when fishing for high value tasty fish. But thank goodness for the bigger boat, and the endurance of the crew. Our Deck hands were Amy and Cheyenne, these two girls were insanely fun, hardworking, and all around amazing. Besides working to keep everything baited, and bringing on board the catches, they also cleaned and fillet the Halibut in what could only be described as a show style ballet presentation on a moving stage. Absolutely adored this tour, the Maverick crew, and the adventure of fishing two hours off-shore for Halibut. Worth every moment!Written 24 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- efgBerlin, Germany17 contributionsThis trip was the highlight of my year. They were spectacular; the guides and the staff were beyond friendly and knowledgeable, and we felt safe and well cared-for every minute of the trip. We chose a helicopter ride in May, which was before the busy season, and it allowed the bears to come so close and we really enjoyed the scenery and the wildlife. The photos I got were spectacular, and the bears were stunning, including the mama bears and their cubs.
The helicopter safari really lets you get to places in Lake Clark you would never be able to reach otherwise, and for a while we sat on a rock outcrop surrounded by mountains and bears, and it felt like we were the only people in the universe. It was beyond description: sublime.
We will definitely come back, and I have raved about this trip every day for the last 6 months.Written 6 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The crew was friendly, had great expertise on the area and actually CARED about the quality of our tour. One crew member continuously checked the boat windows to be sure they were clean and dry and corrected that as needed, to be sure we had great views. Great day and well worth the time and cost.Written 13 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Steven SThornhill, Canada3 contributionsYou can rely on Smokey Bay Air to be honest with you regarding bear viewing opportunities. We had booked our trip months in advance, but because of a poor salmon run the bears had moved on. They refunded us our deposit without even having to ask, and recommended us other great things to do in the area. Also, if there were bears but it was too rainy to go, they would try to reschedule us for another day or give our deposit back, our choice.Written 22 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
