- rebecca c3 contributionsThese guys get ALL the stars! Really a trip of a life time! Our pilot Joe was so good! This is a must do trip! The scenery is so beautiful. The bears are amazing. This company has the experience dialed in.Written 15 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Yog-SothothTrenton, ME1,256 contributionsI have to confess something, dear readers: Yog-Sothoth is a nervous flyer. I don't even like big planes, and during another part of this Alaska adventure I chickened out of a Denali flight seeing tour. That being said, the folks at Emerald Air Service put me completely at my ease and I even enjoyed the +/- one hour flight from Homer to Katmai National Park. (My pilot friends all assure me that the DeHavilland Otter is an amazing airplane...and anyway it can land on the water! In fact it did so twice during our outing!)
The beauty of Hallo Bay -- like a lot of the rest of Alaska -- is mind-blowing and defies description and photographs. We spent the day hiking the tidal flats and got super close to multiple bears, who were just doing their thing. Our guide Lance was a font of knowledge and put us at our ease.
This is not an inexpensive trip but I'll remember it for the rest of my life. One of the top travel experiences I've ever had.Written 4 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Sally was super friendly and helpful during the booking process, and Captain John was a fantastic guide. Not only was his service friendly, informative and prompt, he went out of his way to show us sea otters up close and for a special treat found a pod of Orcas on our way back to Homer! Best day ever!Written 11 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Roger DReading, PA149 contributionsLet's answer the most important question first - Yes we got our limit on Halibut to bring back to the mainland! Now the important details....We were lucky as we booked a trip on the 56' boat named the Ultimate. Why was this important.....because the waves were huge and the wind was whipping about. We lasted out in the fishing grounds hours more than the poor smaller boats. Our Captain was Billy, it was the end of the season and he looked weary, and still he persisted on getting us on the fish to reel in magnificent Halibut one at a time. Pretty much the whole boated limited out, as you would hope for when fishing for high value tasty fish. But thank goodness for the bigger boat, and the endurance of the crew. Our Deck hands were Amy and Cheyenne, these two girls were insanely fun, hardworking, and all around amazing. Besides working to keep everything baited, and bringing on board the catches, they also cleaned and fillet the Halibut in what could only be described as a show style ballet presentation on a moving stage. Absolutely adored this tour, the Maverick crew, and the adventure of fishing two hours off-shore for Halibut. Worth every moment!Written 24 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Katie F5 contributionsThis particular trip is something I had dreamed of doing, and I couldn't be happier that we did it with Sasquatch Alaska Adventure. We had a group of 3, and leading up to our trip in August, we did a TON of research on which company to use for this trip. We all were so thrilled with this company, and our pilot Ty was great. He was super informative, and we felt incredibly safe the entire time. We had the BEST time seeing the bears, and we even got to see a mom and her cubs. The flight itself was also incredible, the views are insane!
We will definitely be back to do this trip again, and will use Sasquatch Alaska for sure!Written 15 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They were spectacular; the guides and the staff were beyond friendly and knowledgeable, and we felt safe and well cared-for every minute of the trip. We chose a helicopter ride in May, which was before the busy season, and it allowed the bears to come so close and we really enjoyed the scenery and the wildlife. The photos I got were spectacular, and the bears were stunning, including the mama bears and their cubs.
The helicopter safari really lets you get to places in Lake Clark you would never be able to reach otherwise, and for a while we sat on a rock outcrop surrounded by mountains and bears, and it felt like we were the only people in the universe. It was beyond description: sublime.
We will definitely come back, and I have raved about this trip every day for the last 6 months.Written 6 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The crew was friendly, had great expertise on the area and actually CARED about the quality of our tour. One crew member continuously checked the boat windows to be sure they were clean and dry and corrected that as needed, to be sure we had great views. Great day and well worth the time and cost.Written 13 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Steven SThornhill, Canada3 contributionsYou can rely on Smokey Bay Air to be honest with you regarding bear viewing opportunities. We had booked our trip months in advance, but because of a poor salmon run the bears had moved on. They refunded us our deposit without even having to ask, and recommended us other great things to do in the area. Also, if there were bears but it was too rainy to go, they would try to reschedule us for another day or give our deposit back, our choice.Written 22 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lindsey FBoise, ID7 contributionsWe booked a half day kayak trip last minute to Yukon Island. They were organized and accommodating. The weather was very rainy and cold, so we wore full rain gear and they provided us with rubber boots, kayak skirts, life vests and neoprene gloves. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and we felt immediately comfortable. We would book again!Written 14 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- L H1 contributionAbsolutely wonderful experience! First time to Alaska for our family with teenagers. Martin gave us a scenic flight tour of the mountains, landed on a beach, and we spent hours up close and personal with 3 young bears romping and playing in the meadow and digging clams at low tide. Then a mother and her cub came down the beach to go clamming, and another single female bear as well. Martin was an excellent pilot and was very experienced interacting with the bears. He supplied hip wading boots to keep dry. He also took exceptional photos of the bears and our family with the bears. Highly recommend our tour guide - he's exceptional.Written 13 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - acedaughterBeverly Hills, MI1,044 contributionsWe had so much fun on our halibut charter! We knew the day was going to be good when a beautiful rainbow appeared on our way out of the harbor. We all caught our limit of two halibut (plus one ray, to be returned to the sea!) It’s hard work fishing for halibut, but the deckhands, Maddie and Clayton, were amazing —very helpful and very entertaining! They filleted all the fish on the way back to the dock. A fish processing rep was at the dock to take our order for freezing and shipping — couldn’t have been easier. And the halibut is delicious!Written 18 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tucker3 contributionsWe spent a great end-of-the-season day viewing the bears at Brooks Falls on our trip with Bald Mt. Air. Ricky, the pilot, was extremely safety conscious and provided a great overview on what to expect. The flight each way is about 1.5 hours. After arriving, visitors must first do a ranger orientation so that proper procedures around the bears is maintained, and then people are free to explore. There are 2 separate viewing platforms, and there were many bears at both locations. It was a unique experience to see the bears in their natural environment. Since we were lucky and had clear weather, at the end of the day, Ricky headed home going over the mountains for some breath-taking views - almost as enjoyable as viewing the bears. All in all it was a great day. Highly recommended!Written 16 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Shawn BWinona, MN1 contributionThis fishing trip was professional from the start. Captain Wess made us all feel comfortable and the guides did a heck of a job. Terrific job from start to finish. We got into some large halibut. It was a great day!Written 14 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GapYrColColorado Springs, CO29 contributionsAwesome, small operation and a great way to see bears at Lake Clark National Park. I did the early morning tour show up at 0520 and leave by 0600. It is well worth it for the early morning views, sunrises, and multiple bear sightings in multiple locations. Chris' knowledge of bears and the best viewing spots was exceptional.Written 19 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ron MClinton, WA4 contributionsFirst off Nancy is a wonderful business manager and her customer service is the best.
Fishing with Mike and KC on the Arctic Addition is an adventure I will recommend to my family, friends and anyone who will listen. Mike’s prices are no more than other premier fishing guides, yes it’s high but well worth it. Mike is a nice man wonderful captan and a really good fisherman.
My experience with charters have been in Canada, Homer Alaska, Valdez Alaska and Washington state. The only charter I have returned to at all is Mike Manns Charters. I’m looking forward to 2023 returning to Homer and fishing with Mike.
Thank you Nancy and Mike your the best.Written 24 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
