Small but fascinating museum. There were samples dating back to the 1950s or earlier! The old notebooks are effective reminders of the scientists' hard work and dedication at a time when commercial computers and the internet were not in existent.
Just don't visit it before sushi.

September 17, 2019, Thursday is the day of the graduation rites for my daughter who has taken up a graduate course as a MEXT full scholar in Keio University. We took a cab from Shibuya and we got to the campus at 9:30 a.m. There were already trickles of the graduating class. There were Japanese, Indians, Muslims, Filipinos, Chinese and other Asian nationalities. Most wore their native dresses from kimonos, to colorful dresses or formal attire. The campus was quite spacious with different buildings for various academic courses. We first went to the main university auditorium. Overwhelming with a capacity of probably 3,000 pax for an hour, we had a short ceremony. Thereafter, the Masters of Science in Systems Design and Management graduates went to another smaller hall with the faculty and the Dean who distributed their individual Certificates of Accomplishment. After the ceremony, it was fun time for photo sessions inside the hall and outside the grounds. What a feeling of happiness and accomplishment as can be seen from the beautiful smiles of the graduates.

This is a free museum open from 10 to 5:30 every day with few holiday closures.
The permenant collection features Shinto artifacts and Tenjin figurines among other things and has explanations in English. There are lockers available and a helpful staff that speaks some English. The student cafeteria has affordable light meals and snacks as well as hot and cold drinks.
Featured now until Feb. 2017 is a wonderful exhibit of Jomon Flame style pots found in the Shinano River Basin. Some are currently on loan to the British museum and certainly have not been seen in Western museums throughout Europe and the U.S.
So this is a chance to broaden your cultural knowledge. There are "museum talks"
Offered on the Jomon period but check with the museum to find out exact dates and times and either be fluent in Japanese or bring a friend who is able to translate.

I visited with my son and before the visit I wrote the museum for a simple question. The director, Inoue San, wrote a very nice reply and I had the pleasure of meeting him when I visited. I would also like to express my gratitude to Kuramochi San who knows a great deal about the Shibusawa’s and is very enthusiastic when taking about them.

The buildings on this campus are quite varied from modern to old style English. The history is on display at one end of the campus but it is all in Japanese but the buildings are worth a look.
