Awesome place, one of my favourite in Rijeka. Long tunnels from second world war placed under the city are cool and fascinting place to visit. And it's completely free!

The stairway that leads from the city center to the famous church of Trsat were built in the 16th century by the captain of Klis during the Turks invasion, Petar Kružić. Initially it counted 128 stairs, but in the 18th century it was rebuilt to its current look, being the most popular way for pilgrims who often climb them on their knees to receive the absolution from the Virgin Mary of Trsat. Although the official data says there are 561 stairs, according to the popular legend, the stairs are cursed, so no one can count the exact number of them. Anyway, it is not the most convenient way to go to Trsat, but everyone should try it at least once in a lifetime...

The channel was designed in 1885 to deviate a part of the local river Rječina (meaning “The Big River”) and prevent the flooding of its final section, which was pretty frequent during the periods of high rainfall season. Although its name meaning the Dead Chanel, it was a major port for vessels bringing oil, vine, fruit and vegetables and its banks were serving as an open market place. Today, the channel is still an important part of the city's life, because all the major roads runs around it and many people walk along its shores going to work or to find some entertainment in the city’s center.

The square is located close to the clock tower and you can get there through the passage. It has in the center a fountain with some old paper mill and department store as a nice example of the 1970 moderan style building. Around it are bars and coffea shops.

From the northern part of Kobler’s square, after passing under the Old Gate, you will enter the remains of the inner square of the Roman forum known as the Tarsatica Principia. There are some interesting well-preserved examples of the ancient masonry and usage of the technique which combined layers of carved blocks made from local grey limestone with the layers of thinner bricks. The whole area is nicely organized and well maintained, but it is obvious that the work here is not yet finished. Anyway, the area is very interesting for the fans of archeological findings, but it is also lined with some excellent bars and small restaurants, worth visiting.
