What travelers are saying
- Sachin KNew York City, NY5,857 contributionsSalar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile. It is located 55 km south of San Pedro de Atacama. It is surrounded by mountains and has no drainage outlets. In the east it is enclosed by the main chain of the Andes, while to the west lies a secondary mountain range of the Andes called Cordillera de Domeyko. It is best viewed from a hot air balloon ride especially to appreciate it’s vastness. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting same or viewing it from a hot air balloon ride.Written February 24, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Katrien SGhent, Belgium1,982 contributionsVery nice ruins, certainly near sunset when they turn reddish. On the grounds of these ruins a little museum was build. The architecture of the building is very well done. Inside there is some information about mining in the region, as well as a nice mural dedicated to the miners. There is also information about geology and local more recent history, as well as astronomy. Has limited opening hours.Written February 29, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Roberto4 contributionsThe landscape is amazing and a lot of people goes there cause is the Antofagasta icon but would be much better if it is improved the facilities around there.Written February 11, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Katrien SGhent, Belgium1,982 contributionsOne can visit the observatory only during daytime, so do not expect to see stars! However, during the tour one gets to have a peak inside the residentia, where the astronomers and engineers sleep, eat and relax. In one of the Bond films the residencia burns down. One also goes up the mountain to see from the outside, and also for 1 telescope, the inside. The telescopes and instruments are impressively large. Easily booked in advance, tours are in English and Spanish. No public transportation to the observatory, but easy to find.Written February 29, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ErnieOTTOttawa, Canada128 contributionsChacabuco is the remaining ghost town from Nitrate splendor at the beginning of 20th century, built by british, americans, and chilean labour. Later in the 70s it was used a prison for political prisoners after a coup in 1973. Be ready to see a ruined small town, with little restoration, so nothing looks like it was in the 1920s, since is not taken care of by government or private stakeholders, which is a shame. Bring your camera or phone for beautiful pictures of empty mud wall buildings, abandoned industrial equipment. Signs in spanish and english, clean bathrooms inside the facility, very good presentation at the entrance by local caretaker, so you have a good idea on what to see.Written August 11, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Andy R21 contributionsNice casino. Clean, friendly staff, variety of games. I played blackjack and roulette. It cost $3000 pesos to get in. I went on a Tuesday night, and there wasn't too many people there.Written January 20, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jocelyn WChristchurch, New Zealand34 contributionsYou wouldn’t expect to see something like this emerge in the desert during an otherwise quite boring drive along the Antofagasta to Santiago motorway. It’s a fun stop to take great photos. We took a taxi as no other public transport options were available.Written October 27, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Katrien SGhent, Belgium1,982 contributionsWhen I last visited the outside of the church was largely boarded up, due to the protests. However, the church was open, so we had a quick look inside. The church is nothing special, but then there are very few interesting sites in Antofagasta.Written February 29, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
