I had heard about this temple when visiting another exhibit. Rebuilt several times this is a temple with a long history in Singapore, though little of that will be apparent to people who can't read the Chinese inscriptions. It has an earth god and a guan yin statue and another I didn't recognise.
While it isn't close to downtown, it's not that long a trip by bus. Walking from the bus stop was pleasant enough, and went by a bunch of durian stalls with dining areas (because they don't travel in Singapore) plus a place that sells wholesale/retail coffee beans. Going a bit farther afield on the way back, the Old Airport Road food market is large and filled with tasty food. Note that Geylang Road, while pleasant, does run through one of the seedier parts of Singapore, with shops and people selling things that might not be appropriate for small kids.
