- baroomMississauga, Canada3,214 contributionsAfter an al fresco breakfast with family friends at Lawa Cafe, Caleruega was our next stop. Our friends have been to Caleruega a few times but this was my family's first ever visit. For a popular wedding venue and tourist destination, the access road leading to this place was unpaved and very rough. At the entrance, we stopped to pay both parking fee (P40) and entrance fee (P30/person) while the guard gave us purple wristbands to wear while in the premises.
Our rental van driver let us off at the side entrance which was on the left side of the Transfiguration Chapel. We saw there was a midmorning wedding about to take place so we only took a quick peek inside. Outside the chapel, we went down the Dominican Steps and unexpectedly gave ourselves a good stair workout. We spent the next two hours exploring Caleruega's beautiful grounds. We took photos everywhere... the cauldron or "kawa" water fountain, walkways above the koi fish ponds, hanging bridge, Tent Chapel... We even saw a bunch of creatures I don't remember seeing before such as Philippine dragon flying lizard or "hambubukag," cicada and red maya. A tame mutt dog also followed us as we rested in the Tent Chapel. We did not encounter a lot of other visitors during this Monday visit. Except for the wedding party back at the Transfiguration Chapel, our photos had no errant strangers in them.
Do wear comfortable shoes and expect to do a lot of walking and stair climbing while in Caleruega. Lots of bloodthirsty mosquitoes around so either cover up or apply insect repellant to avoid being feasted on. Washroom fee costs P10/person.Written September 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Nino de Paz - Greenbelt Chapel is a five minute walk from the Shangri-La Hotel, in Makati. Catholic masses are conduted in English at various times throughout the week and is in a very convenient location for employees in the financial district as well as area residents. For business travellers or families staying in Makati that would like to be able to attend mass while away from home, the chapel is located in close proximity to most of the hotels. Greenbelt Chapel is an open-air facility with plenty of overhead fans to facilitate the comfort of attendees. Though the chapel is located in the city centre, it is set back far enough from the street that ambient noise from traffic is barely detectable through the trees that surround the facility. The Pastor presiding over the mass was quite good. We found his homily to be well thought out, and current with today's times. Whether you are a practicing Catholic or not, the Chapel is a great source of peace, a place where you can receive a blessing from the officiating pastor, or even a place for personal reflection.Written August 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,443 contributionsThe first Manaoag Church was built on the site in 1600, but like most churches in the Philippines, there have been several rebuilding and restorations following fires, earthquakes, insurrection and war. The current church was completed in the early 1900s, but rebuilt following damage during WWII. The church is a large brick structure
with an impressive dome. The exterior is rather plain, but the interior is more elaborate, especially the large ornate altar. There is an interesting museum behind the church, with soothing air conditioning. The church was elevated to a minor basilica in 2015 by Pope Francis.Written October 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This is one of those amazing and beautiful cathedral we’ve been. It’s where you can cleanse your mind, body and soul. Parking is not free and you’ll be charged 10 pesos for the first hour and a 100 pesos penalty if you over stayed.
The only worse thing is the public toilet when they charge 5 pesos per use and the toilet is so gross, dark and dirty! I wonder if the church administration tolerates this kind of condition and I’m sure it will be a worse experience for foreign tourists.Written April 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Ample free parking located at the back of the main church but make sure to be there just after a mass...for you to get a nice parking space under a tree shade. Healing mass is every Saturday at 9am. A sacred place flocked by lots of pilgrims...both young and old. Pls also note that expect a very heavy traffic coming out of the site going to the main road...it took us 45mins to 1 hour. I suggest you turn left first as you go out of the gate and have some food in a wide array of restaurants before going home. Trust me you wouldn't want to be stucked !Written October 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,443 contributionsI have seen literally thousands of churchs in my life and I can honestly claim that St. Augustine's Church in Paoay is one of the most interesting. While the archetectural style has been termed "Earthquake Baroque" the interior has little of the over-the-top ornate decor of European baroque churchs. What makes the Paoay church unique are the incredible massive buttresses supporting the walls, intended to make the church resilient to the frequent earthquakes in the region. The church is one of the oldest in the Philippines, constructed in 1710. The adjacent bell tower was constructed in 1793. The Paoay church is one of four Philippine churches enshrined as World Heritage Site ("Baroque Churches of the Philippines").Written October 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - baroomMississauga, Canada3,214 contributionsWe were in Tagaytay with family friends on Mon, Jun 5, and after a shoe emergency stop at Ayala Malls Serin post-lunch, we continued our DIY day visit by heading to Tierra De Maria. It was raining when our rental van driver dropped us off at the gates so I only took a couple of photos of the huge Mother Mary statues outside before we all rushed indoors. The non air-conditioned chapel is small but there were not a lot of visitors at the time so we got to look around, take photos, say a quick prayer and sit quietly. My friend even wrote prayer-wishes to drop inside the wish box. Instead of an altar, there is a life-size crucifix at the front. There are many other religious statues inside, properly identified, with laminated prayers in English next to them. There is a store beside the chapel which sells religious gifts such as rosaries, cross necklaces, figurines, etc. We only stayed here for 30 mins.Written September 30, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I wrote my petition on the paper provided and left some donation in the envelope. You can do this, too,if you like. It’s Nice to know they’re there to pray for us in the outside world.Written January 27, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The facade is very appealing and photogenic and the simple interior is clean and bright. But what the church is most famous for, of course, is the historical significance of being the venue for the drafting and promulgation of the Malolos Constitution, in 1898-99. There is also an interesting museum adjacent to the church.Written October 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - doctorfoxtrotTaguig City, Philippines13,209 contributionsDefinitely one of the most important Catholic church in the country. Many Virgin Mary devotees come on a Wednesday. Inside , they kept reminding of the health safety protocols such as social distancing. Meaning patrons are to stay one seat apart from each other. Outside the church are those lining up for the candle prayer section. Also there are those selling prayer fliers , and religious statues as well. Further out are several fast food restaurants and even the Baclaran market. As well see people doing instagram , facebook and tiktok.Written February 25, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GuillermoPhilippines1,187 contributionsFor a spectacular view of the stunning asymmetric Mayon Volcano 🌋, one of the best places to visit is by driving up the small road leading to the church. Parking on the side facing the volcano allows for capturing the best pictures, especially with the backdrop of the century-old church. Nearby, there are some good restaurants to explore.
For optimal viewing, it is recommended to visit late in the afternoon or early in the morning when the skies are clear, providing a picture-perfect view of the volcano. Do note that the church may be closed when there are no services being held. This vantage point offers a memorable experience of witnessing the beauty of Mayon Volcano against the backdrop of the historic church.Written August 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nicholas CQuezon City, Philippines519 contributionsThis is a magnificent piece of baroque architecture, with a superb piece of ' cultural cross pollination'. Built in the 1800's - the Spanish conquistador Selcado brought masons from the then Spanish Main, now Mexico to help. They added a few 'Aztec suns' to the exterior building. Brilliant place, do not miss it if you are in the area.Written March 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
