The Nativity scene of contemporary Christmas happened in Bethlehem. There is a baby in a manger, Mary and Joseph,  stable animals, the 3 Magi, and a shining star. We are in The Church of Nativity, the birthplace of Jesus, 2000 years ago.

Helena, the mother of Constantine built a Byzantine church over it. The Persians invaded but spared its destruction. They saw the robes of one of the 3 Magi, similar to their Kings. Crusaders restored and magnified it. The Ottomans neglected it to decay. An earthquake devastated it. The Church of Nativity is ministered by the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholics, and Armenians, today.

We entered a small and narrow passage into the Grotto of Nativity. On a marble floor is a fourteen-point silver star marking the birth spot with Latin inscriptions.

It says, "Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary”

Hazem Bannoura was simply fantastic. We were a little apprehensive about coming to the West Bank, but we are so glad we did it and felt extremely well cared for by Hazem. Hazem is extremely knowledgeable about the history, the people, and the politics. Hazem clearly is a passionate supporter of Palestinian people and was frank and open about his opinions. The West Bank is a tremendously interesting place and if you limit yourself to Bethlehem and Shepherd's Field, you are really missing out. Hazem will show you so much more. My wife and I will always remember our day with him.

I highly recommend any and all Green Olive tours. The guides are extremely well informed and educated about the issues facing the West Bank and Gaza, and provide a truly comprehensive and illuminating experience. A huge highlight.

My partner an I went on the Arab Al-Rashaida sunrise hike and it was the most magical thing. We were picked up in Bethlehem by Nidal from Siraj Center and driven an hour south to the Rashaida campground. We were graciously hosted and offered coffee and light snacks by Ismail. Afterwards we hiked in the desert through the night during a new moon so we got incredible views of the sky, taking rests as necessary, with many opportunities to do some star gazing. It was a cool August night so we felt very comfortable with the temperature with only light jackets. Right before dawn, we arrived at a breathtaking lookout over the Dead Sea and spent about an hour there just taking in the views and watching flocks of white storks migrating south over the Jordan valley.

Then we were driven back to our starting point and served a simple but plentiful breakfast and coffee served by Ismail and his partner after which Nidal drove us all the way back to Bethlehem to our hotel.

Also, shout out to Mayada who works out of Siraj Center's office for being super patient and accommodating to us while working on a plan and answering our plethora of questions.

This was an amazing way of exploring Palestine and supporting local tourism there.
