For those wanting to explore further, there is a path up to the cemetery on the adjacent hills overlooking the entire complex - it also has good views to the giant Bibi Khanym Mosque.
The Bibi-Khanum Mosque, the Regestan with its three Madrassahs, the mausoleums at the Shah-i-Zinda, the ancient site at the Afrasiyab with its ancient wall frescoes all make for a spectacular few days of discovery...

Registan Samarkand
This site has been lovingly restored to its glory, and it is worth visiting for enough time to linger, and to return in early morning or evening, when they are lit up.
Impressive by its size alone, this is complemented by the details & opulence of the three separate buildings and superseded by the view on the full set.

Beyond the asthetics the mausoleum is a site of pilgrimage with a Iman who recites a verse of the Koran when requested by a pilgrim.

Kalta Minor Minaret Khiva
The concentric layers of blus tilework are absolutely stunning and this must be Khiva's most recognisable landmark!
The blue seems to vibrate in the air - view it up close and then go climb the citadel wall near the west gate to get the view from there.
