We were undecided whether to take the night train from Dong Hoi to Ninh Bình or to take a flight to Hanoi and travel back on the train. While reading various reviews about the train services, many that were not very complimentary, I came across Lotus Train. The reviews looked so much better and we decided to take the plunge. I contacted them direct and got a quick response, we placed an order and paid online, receiving our tickets by return. We didn’t need to print them, just downloaded to the mobile. The station staff at Dong Hoi told us where we should stand on the platform and our train, the SE20, arrived on time. The attendant greeted us politely and showed us to our cabin, pointing out the toilets, which were clean, on the way. He came back with our goody bag, which contained bread, jam, cake, fruit, beer or soft drink and coffee, more than enough for a snack. With just the two of us in the cabin we had enough room for our luggage and were able to spread out. We quickly settled into our clean bunks and slept surprisingly well for several hours, before arriving on time in Ninh Binh. Not 5 Star western luxury but a good service nonetheless.

The overall experience was OK: we had a good night of sleep, the cabin was relatively clean and we did not experience any major discomfort (the train was even on time !). However, I noticed multiple stains on the bed sheets, the cabin was too small and the toilet was very dirty (impossible to flush). It is not a luxury tourist train unlike mentioned otherwise on some websites, therefore it is absolutely overpriced considering that Vietnam is poor and wages are very low.
In the end, I think I should have booked a cheaper train through my hostel instead of booking it online (on baolau.com) days before...

The bus is clean and on time. Just an update, I am on board the bus and the ticket price has been increased to 45k Dong, unlike what was advertised 35k Dong. Date - 10 July 2022

Tue bus was clean and new. The seat was comfortable and you get blankets. The staff was really helpfull. In the bus you can even charge your phone and they have WiFi. They have changed the name of the company into Interline bus.

Not an attraction that you would seek out, other than one to utilize for transportation. The tour group I was with had an overnight train to Hue, and I can tell you that was an experience I do not want to do over.

Took the train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh. It took 42 hours. I dunno if I have to continue after that last sentence but I will. The bed is average the cleanliness is average (toilets are pretty grim as some bloke decide to use the hose to shower). We got a 4 bed cabin and we’re put with a nice Vietnamese older couple that kept feeding us. So that was nice. We had the two top bunks. We left at 2pm and arrived at 7am 2 days later. So two nights. Let me now lay out how your trip will go:

0-10 hours - you’re happy, hydrated, maybe got a bit of light reading done, eaten some Vietnamese food, listen to some podcasts perhaps? All is good you’re feeling relaxed.

10-20 hours - You’re getting a bit sick of eating rice with no taste at this point and your backs starting to ache from the bed. You’re also most likely tired as you haven’t really slept properly.

20-30 hours - Your body is in pieces. You’ve effectively fasted for two days. You’re dehydrated and the rooms spinning. You’re SO is calling you a whore for thinking the train was a good idea

30-40 hours - You have become one with the train. You’re back in as hard as the mattress. The room stopped spinning two hours ago and has now gone for a walk. You have never felt this sick before. This feels like what COVID was suppose to feel like according to Karen next door.

40-41 hours - You are contemplating suicide.

42 hours - The train stops. You leave the train like Ahab left the desert or Jonah left the mouth of the whale. You will never be the same again.

All in all it is essentially the same as doing a marathon. Prepare yourself. It is not easy.

We booked through our hotel. They were really helpful and advised us to book all 4 beds in the cabin between the two of us so we had the cabin to ourselves The beds weren't the most comfortable experience but fit us ok. My husband is 6 foot and managed I'm 5 foot 10". The door to the cabin locks so all our belongings were safe. We were pretty tired so slept quite well. The toilets were foul but we weren't expecting luxury. We weren't supplied with any water so make sure you buy some at the station before leaving.
