We met Derek at our allotted pick up and he drove us to meet up with Nate who took us up to Mauna Kea.
Derek was excellent and imparted so much information about the island and its history the drive to our rendezvous flew past.
We then meet up with Nate, who took us to the summit via the visitor centre, Nate also imparted a wealth of knowledge on the journey up and during the experience itself.
Despite both Derek and Nate setting our expectations the experience surpassed all our expectations, from the observatories to the sunset and onwards to the star viewing.
The star viewing, commentary, telescope viewing and the photos taken of us (when I look at our photos you would think it was in a studio with backdrop) were great
Nate kept checking on us to ensure we did not feel the affects of the "rarefied air"
We went back down to meet Derek who take us back to our pick up point and made sure everyone had a ride home before he left.
An unmissable experience with excellent co hosts, I thoroughly recommend if you have the opportunity.

This was an awe-inspiring experience! Our guide, Stefan, was so friendly and knowledgeable, and he did a wonderful job of letting us know exactly what to expect throughout our 6.5 hour journey. There were many nice touches to make sure that we were comfortable: a sound system with a microphone so everyone in the van could hear, warm parkas, gloves, and snow pants to protect us from the cold winds on the summit, a delicious vegetarian sandwich for dinner, and hot chocolate during our stargazing. The picture Stefan took of us with Milky Way in the background is one that we will always treasure. Thank you so much!

Our trip to the summit of Mauna Kea summit to see the observatories, watch the sunset, and then star gaze was unforgettably amazing! Jeff Manzo, our guide, was fabulous! Friendly, funny, and very knowledgeable about pretty much everything. He filled us in on a variety of things about Hawaii, Hawaiian culture & language, geographical points of interest, history, etc. He talked to us on the whole trip up to the summit, which is a long time to talk! He remembered everyone’s names, which impressed the heck out of me. The best part was looking at the stars because Jeff clearly knows his stuff. He uses a telescope as well as this gadget that focuses in on the star or galaxy and produces a nice, detailed image. The dinner they gave us was good! The cookies we had with hot chocolate later were maybe the best I’ve ever had-chocolate-dipped macadamia nut-yum. I have a suggestion about dinner-there were two choices: beef stew or vegetarian chili. The chili was excellent! I suggest the company just make a ton of that and add meat to some, maybe ground turkey, because a fair number of people eat meet, but not beef. It would be cheaper too! And yummy. It’s a long day but thoroughly enjoyable. The trip home was restful, with gentle Hawaiian music on the radio. We had a great time! I absolutely recommend this company if you’re looking for this kind of adventure. Make sure you get on Jeff’s bus!

I will recommend this tour to everyone that visits Big Island. Even if you ever hope to visit Big Island, put this on your bucket list! James, your guide, is a true expert on the stars and Big Island. He was knowledgeable, friendly and funny AND he has the right camera equipment to ensure you will receive amazing high-res photos you won’t be able to get anywhere else. The icing on the top is that you do not go to the summit of Mauna Kea so for those worried about the high altitude at the top - this would be a great option for you! (See altitude warnings below). James also will cancel and fully refund your tickets if there is a full moon that will ruin the ability to see the stars, not like many companies that will continue with the tour if the skies are not optimal for stargazing. We actually could have gotten a different stargazing tour for FREE (through Chase points) and I don’t regret having to pay for this one (detailed below why we switched).

DATE OF VISIT: End of April 2022
    PRICE FOR EXPERIENCE: 5/5 stars
    TOUR GUIDE: 5/5 stars
COMMUNICATION PRIOR TO TOUR: 5/5 stars

There are tours that are longer for the same price as this one, so I was hesitant to book this. However, timing the tours to the summit that are 6-8 hours and start at 4pm and end at 10-11pm was very difficult with our itinerary. Not to mention the possibility of altitude sickness (see more below). So, I was very happy to find this tour for 2 hours that is 8000-9000 elevation, as compared to 12-13,000 at the summit. You will almost feel like your in outer space with how pitch black it is with no other cars around you. Such an experience, like none other

ALTITUDE: Warning that many can get altitude sickness and this is a warning for every tour. In fact, our tour guide said that he used to guide summit tours and they would always result in someone in the group passing out. Yikes. I get quite sick while traveling up any mountain (even just in the car), so I brought oxygen canisters that I bought on Amazon just in case, but didn’t have to use them and felt fine during our tour.

DRESS WARMLY: James has comfy and warm jackets for you, but the cool air and breeze still bites - similar to lake effect in Chicago. I brought thicker leggings, t-shirt and sweater and used one of the jackets and was freezing within the first several minutes. You can always escape to James’ van or your own car, but then you’ll miss such great parts of the tour.

ADJUSTMENTS TO MEETING SPOT AND TIME and POSSIBLE CANCELLATION: Just note that it is a possibility your tour will be cancelled based on the conditions of the sky that night. It is recommended to book the tour towards the beginning of your time on the Big Island in case you can reschedule for later that week. James texts whoever booked the tour with the exact location and time as the tour gets closer (so note there may be adjustments but the changes are not far from the original estimate).

PHOTO OPS: You will have PLENTY of time for photo ops and I 100% appreciate James’ patience and willingness to get everyone the shots that they want. There was a couple that wanted to copy a pose that a couple after them did, and James was willing to get another shot of them. Be ready with how you’d like to pose under the stars

PHOTO PACKAGE: We did not book the high-res photo package originally and James was super easy to work with to upgrade our photos

TOUR GUIDE/RIDING IN THE VAN: We opted to ride in James’ van where others followed in their own car. I would recommend riding in the van, as it’s not that far from the original spot and you do miss out on information on the way there/back. As mentioned above, James is extremely knowledgeable and even shares about his time training for Mars. He has amazing camera equipment and a telescope to capture the moving stars and not look blown out - not available on your own or on other tours. He also makes it exciting and entertaining - not like some tours that start and it’s the most awkward 2 hours of your life lol.

BATHROOMS: There will NOT be bathrooms where you meet James. However, there is the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area (put it in Google or Waze) that is open 24 hours and has bathroom stalls, soap, sinks and even paper towels! And it’s not far from where you will meet James

We had a great exciting time in this ATV Tour. Our whole family were so satisfied with the crew and the machines. The place is very easy to access, just 10 minutes from Costco in the heart of Kona. The way on the way up there is a very beautiful drive. Excellent job on all the staff. Will do it again in a heartbeat.

It is absolutely horrifying that you have destroyed the ambiance of the Kona Inn with your tacky luau! I have been enjoying the lovely setting for 45 years and you have ruined the experience of visiting and eating at the historic Kona Inn. I hope you fail!

We had an amazing morning walking through the forest in Hawaii! They provided bags for us all, sunscreen, bug repellent, and water bottles! They were so knowledgeable and we learned so much from the tour!!! We then went to lunch with the most spectacular views and we even stopped for snow cones!!! It was a great morning!!!

We went on the Twighlight Volcanoes Unveiled tour and it was marvelous! This was our second trip to the Big Island for my wife and I and we knew we wanted to see Volcanoes National Park, but we didn’t really want to hassle with night driving and figuring out where to go and what to see. Rob was a great guide for our 12-person group- he was clearly knowledgeable about the island and its geology and volcanic activity. We learned so much and experienced great hikes to eerie landscapes, experienced a beautiful lava tube without all the crowds, saw beautiful vistas, and got to see active lava at night. We never had to worry about food and drink and Rob was attentive to all our needs. We would highly recommend this tour

We arrived in Hilo earlier than expected and this was a last minute adventure, which became the highlight of our day, and our trip to Hilo. It was a great experience, and our tour guide (David) was awesome!! He was very knowledgeable, provided lots of valuable details, and we learned a lot through his constellations explanation. Best guide we have had in all our recent activities!!

Dreu picked us up from our resort and instantly made us feel like ohana. Very easy to talk to, full of knowledge and a eagerness to help educate us on the Hawai'i culture and history. Our tour was slightly different and we went to the Valley of the Kings, the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, Akaka falls, stopped off at a local fruit vendor, had some malasadas. We loved the entire experience, Our group had older people vacationing and we brought our child and everyone got something out of it. We would gladly recommend this tour company and Dreu in particular again without hesitation.

Since this is the only luau I’ve attended, I have no comparison. I thought the show was good, the people were very nice and food was great! The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 was because I’m not sure if this is a typical authentic luau. It is small, they have crowd activities, and it lasted about 2.5 hours.

My adult daughter and I had a great time riding these motorcycles! We are experienced riders so after our tour guide AJ noticed our intermediate skill level he took us on a route to see the Green Sand Beach. He gave us time to jump in the water and enjoy the scenery. AJ was very attentive to make sure to go at a speed that we were comfortable with and always checking in. He also followed our request to stop at certain places to take photos. There was various terrain on our ride, from dirt, soft sand trails to some rocky areas but I'm sure AJ wouldn't take beginner riders through the more difficult areas to ride. He was very friendly and we feel that it was worth the price. The reason why I didn't give it 4 stars was because he wasn't aware of our reservation until I called the day before to confirm. AJ said that he didn't get a notification from Trip Advisor so I don't know who is to blame. I'm glad it worked out in the end because we had a blast!
