After doing quite a bit of research, we decided to go as a family of 20 to check out the Mauna Kea Summit to watch the sunset & stargazing. It really is such a unique experience and a wonderful evening activity. Even if you are unsure or hesitant about the weather, layer layer layer and dress warm because it is freezing! The drive up was so cool because it truly felt like we were riding above the fog and clouds. You definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle as they do check your vehicle before allowing you to head up to the summit. Make sure you arrive at least an hour before the scheduled sunset time as they require you to wait 30 minutes at the visitor center before driving up so you can get acclimated to the altitude. The drive from the visitor center to the summit is about another 30 minutes. You can drive to the visitor center in any type of car but the sunset views are pretty non existent unless you hike up the hill across the street. The visitor center doesn’t have much except a handful of souvenirs so you pretty much have to sit in the car or bring your own folding chairs should you decide to sit outside. The night sky gets truly dark about an hour after the sun sets and then the stars light up and you can see the most stunning view of the Milky Way. I wish the cars in the parking area would turn their headlights off to avoid disrupting the views - that was the only bummer. It was definitely worth while, just come prepared! Oh and definitely make sure you have a full tank of gas before heading towards Mauna Kea as there are zero gas stations nearby.

Absolutely stunning view. Would definitely make the trek again. Steep but short hike to a black sand beach. The food truck just up the road was a bonus. Their chicken hekka was fantastic.

Just go! This spot is truly amazing. The views and grounds are incredible. Go, make amazing memories, and take excellent photos. I saw younger kids and elderly people walking along the paved path. It's a doable and short walk--well worth the stop!

Spectacular views from the lookout. Road was very steep and wouldn't recommend without an AWD. It was steep hike (difficult heading down and then obviously back up).

It was disappointing because the volcano was not erupting. No red lava flows. Just cooled lava, rents in the earth, and steam. Other than the sheer size of the caldera, it was boring.

The trainers were incredibly knowledgeable and kind. My group loved the experience! Pictures should be included for the price you pay for the experience, though.

I loved this beautiful white sand beach! Such a comfortable fun way to spend and afternoon. There is plenty of shade if you do not enjoy having too much sun. The water is a nice comfortable temperature too.

Amazing experience with breath-taking views and sights. Some more information regarding the length of hikes would be great especially since we had young children. Also, additional information regarding which sights are accessible via car versus hiking only.

Not to be confused with Crater Rim Drive, the Chain of Craters Road (38-miles round trip) is the one that takes you down to the coast. You will see views of spectacular overlooks and many lava fields. Stop at Kelakomo Overlook to see the southern coastline. The Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs site and the narrow road to the Hilina Pali Overlook are along or off the Chain of Craters Road. The Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs site has rock paintings dating hundreds of years ago. Travel a 9-mile one-lane, car-wide paved road from Chain of Craters Road to the Hilina Pali Overlook for impressive views of the coastline and Pacific Ocean.

Some other highlights include the black lava fields with signage indicating the year it occurred. Interspersed between the piles of lava are plants. The Halona Kahakai pullout shows the Chain of Craters Road as it winds through the black lava fields. The Ko’oko’olu Crater is barely visible due to the growth of trees and ferns at its rim. Pauahi Crater’s recent eruptions occurred in May and November 1973, and November 1979. Muliwai a Pele, “river of pele”, is the remains of a lava river. This scenic drive is a must do when on the Big Island.

A long and winding drive leads to a large bay looking out across toward Captain Cook monument and Kealakekua Bay. Look toward the center of the cliffs for a "keyhole" shaped opening here is where the ancient Hawaiians would bring their dead for burial.

This beach is a wonderful stop off for ocean views, butterflies, mongooses, and best of all, sea turtles!

Soft sands, crystal clear water + sea turtles - what’s not to love? Our family of 20 spent 2 days of our trip at this stunning beach. An absolute favorite spot on the Big Island for sure. A great beach for kiddos to swim and play as the water is fairly calm and the ocean floor is soft white sand. We were lucky enough to spot some sea turtles both times we were there and it truly is such a magical sight. Just please please be respectful and keep a good amount of distance between you and them. I definitely recommend this beach to any and everyone.

This by far was our favorite beach! It has everything! snorkeling, beach, shade from the trees and lots of sun. There are areas that are rocky but walking down there are places sandy areas. There is a restroom present and an area to shower off the sandy. Large parking lot stays full. Pack a cooler with drinks, sandwiches and snacks. It's a great place to spend the day!

Parking is a bit limited but people are in an out as not much to see other than the falls. No access to water for swimming.

The ranch was beautiful and definitely a different experience from our many previous visits. But the apartment was disappointing because the view over green hills to the ocean from the wall of windows in the main room was completely blocked by the roof of the adjacent house. This was not shown in any of the photos so it was easy to expect views like the photos. Most reviewers didn’t mention the obstruction or that the little outside table had views of several old sheds and pens. Glimpses of rolling green are visible in side windows but none with comfortable seating (like in the stairwell going to the laundry in the garage). What bothered us so much would probably be no problem for younger, more active people who wouldn’t mind walking and sitting on the grass to enjoy the peaceful green vistas whatever the weather.
